How much water is too much for a dog?

My dog, a 10 y/o rottweiler, drinks a lot of water on a daily basis. I will usually have to fill up his water dish 2-3 times per day at a rate of approximately 2 quarts every time. If his dish is empty he makes a fuss.

Could he have some type of parasite that's making him drink that much water.

    It could have diabetes, best to check with the vet. Although he could just like drinking water. I would still check with the vet though.

    He may have a disease but it would be best to get a vet's opinion instead of trying to guess. I always allow my dogs to drink as much as they wish, but they live outside. They are large Labradors and I would estimate their consumption at a gallon and a half a day. I can't tell for sure because they have their own horse trough, but I've watched them drink several quarts at time. However, an increase in water consumption could mean a lot of things, some of them serious. See a vet.

    Not necessarily a parasite, but there are diseases that can have excessive drinking as a symptom. I'd recommend giving your vet a call.

    Polydipsia (excessive drinking) and polyuria (excessive urination) are early signs of several diseases, including:

    * Kidney failure

    * Diabetes mellitus

    * Uterine infection (called pyometra)

    * Liver disease

    * High blood calcium

    * Uncommon abnormalities of the pituitary gland

    * Inability of the tubules of the kidney to reabsorb water properly (i.e. “nephrogenic” diabetes insipidus)

    Dogs normally take in about 20 to 40 milliliters per pound of body weight per day, or about 3 to 4 cups of water per day for a 20 pound dog. Anything more than that, under normal environmental conditions, is considered polydipsia.

    Just a note - do *not* deprive him of water. Adult dogs should have access to fresh water at all times. If your dog does have kidney disease or some other medical problem, withholding water can make it much worse.

    You can never have too much water, EXCEPT...

    If your dog is a working dog or your dog has just come inside from a long run. Giving them too much water when they're "Hot" (meaning, worked up) can cause them to get very sick. It's best to limit water until they've cooled off and reached normal body temperature and temperament.

    Your dog may be diabetic. You may want to get this checked out, but parasites do not cause thirst. Diabetes is maintainable in dogs nowadays and with diet/exercise, your dog will be as good as new.

    Good luck!

    I had a Maltese who HATED water (wouldn't even go out in the rain) but now I have a Maltese Poodle mix and a Cairn Terrier Poodle mix who could roll around in mud and snow all day if they were allowed... It depends on the breed and the individual dog. I would do some research, find out if there are any small dogs that were bred as hunting dogs or some such. I know that poodles were bred as fishing dogs, so I imagine they like water. (Actually, their fishing purpose is the reason that poodle cuts are so funny looking...)

    He may be fine, but since he is 10, which is elderly for a rott, take him to the vet for a check-up. They will do blood work, which will tell you if there are problems with kidney function or diabetes, which would be the most likely causes of high water consumption. Both things are treatable and your friend may live longer if it is diagnosed now.

    Your dog could have diabetes Dogs do drink a lot of water with this disease. Does your dog have unusual bad breath?

    I would have your dog checked out by the Vet.

    There is a blood test they can run.

    My pit bull drinks almost 5 gallons of water a day. I took him to a vet, but they said there wasn't any thing wrong with him. Take him to the vet anyway. You will feel a lot better.

    He could have a kidney infection. Has he always drank this much or did he just start? If he just started, I would call the vet. maybe a change of food or something could help.
