Ford 351c....big block or small block?

When I sold parts, most ford guys referred to to the Cleveland as a big block. I would win bets when I showed them that Ford Motorsports listed the 351c in the small block family. I also stumbled across a tech article that stated you put Cleveland heads on a Windsor (or vice versa) by plugging some water passages and drilling out others. Where did the big block myth come from?

I think the confusion comes from the deck height, it's a tall block motor compared to the usual small blocks, but it's still a small block. Small Block and Big Block are relative terms, I don't think there is a definitive dividing line. I had old ford 312's and 292's that were considered big block or Y block engines there is a 352 big block and there are some 400 small blocks go figure

The most awesome ford ever made was the Lincoln 462 elephant motor, had one in a 60 F100 what an awesome truck that was.

it is a big block EDIT A 351 modified is not the same engine as a 400 there is a 49 cubic inch difference between the 2. Yes they have the same block but the insides are different. They have a considerable amount more power than a small block. This is a fact. Yes you can build a small block to run the same amount of horsepower they were no where near the same stock. Big blocks have much more torque than small block always have always will.

It could be that the Cleveland heads have a look that says big-block, even though it isn't one. After all, the only way you can tell a big block from a small block is by looking at the heads, how the exhaust ports look, where the water inlets are, etc. With the carb and air cleaner on, there's no other easy way to tell, and the Cleveland heads don't look like small-block Windsors do.

The Cleveland is a small block and with tiny valve heads... a poor motor..... now a 351 windsor has big valve heads and can make a whole lot more power than a 351C

The 351 Cleveland is a big block but has a short stroke. Much better engine for power but burns oil.
