Why did Madden become cursed?

Everyone know the ledge of the Madden Curse, where its coverboys succome to a horrible defeats, during their cover year? My question is Madden Football has been out since 1989, why has the curse only gone back to 1999? Why where the earlier coverboys so luck?

The facts are hard to ignore but since its being duped a "coincidence" and a "superstition" lets think about it. Madden stops putting his mug on the cover in 99' (most likely to him getting on in years and not as appealing to the early teens of today) and began putting athletes on the cover. I don't know if John sustained any injuries in the booth the years he graced the cover but you never know, he could have pulled something wrestling Summerall for the last danish on the breakfast cart and we didn't hear about it.

Back on point here, I believe it is a curse in the sense that having the honor of being plastered on the cover of the #1 selling and longest tenured NFL video game ever comes with a price. That price of course would be becoming a marked man by every player who wasn't on the cover. Think about it with the exception of the Ray Lewis cover all have been on the offensive side of the ball. So you put a Running Back on the cover and he is gonna get harrased more and hit harder because everyone has a point to prove increasing his odds of being injured.

I guess we will find out in about 6-7 months if the curse holds water or not. If I'm hearing correctly it will be Vince Young this year, a tall lanky quaterback that likes to run and has his own show on b.e.t. I'd put my last dollar on a short season for Vince, but I guess we will just have to see.

I am wondering if the Madden Curse is just slow and now can be immediate or take some time - a year (give or take) to rear its ugly head. And when it does it takes the whole team down. 2009 Favre made the Pro Bowl and the next season had a career year with Vikings. And now...well I don't want to talk about that and Minnesota is 4-7. 2010 Larry Fitzgerald led the league in receiving TD and had a solid playoff performance. And now he has career lows in everything and Arizona is 3-8. 2010 Troy Polamalu blows out his knee and the Steelers miss the playoffs. 2011 Drew Brees continues to play amazing and won the 'Sportsman of the Year' award. Who knows what is next???

The whole idea is apocryphal. There is no Madden curse, just as there is no Sports Illustrated cover curse.

The truth is that the players featured on Madden covers and Sports Illustrated covers are "featured" players, and as such get more playing time than other players. Since these guys get more playing time, they are more likely to become injured.

There is no more to the so-called "curse" than that.

Well the guy who said Garrison Hearst was on the cover is stupid beacause the first cover guy was eddie george. I feel it is not a curse but those players attract attention and want to be taken out by opposing teams. They try harder to hurt they player in hopes of becoming the new madden cover boy.

Well because nothing bad happened to Madden, don't ask me WHY the curse didn't effect him though. I guess because he was injured before he even had an NFL Career, hey maybe that is why the curse started.

The reason that it only goes back to 1999 is that this is the year he began putting athletes on the cover rather than pictues of himself. Apparently in putting his picture on the cover for 10 years though he failed to curse himself.

It's not a curse; it's just a coincidence, albeit an uncanny one. Maybe the "honor" of appearing on the cover just puts more pressure on them which causes them to struggle. Somehow I think Vince Young will break that trend this year.

I don't think it's a curse, the first couple injuries were just coincidences, then after a while it got in the heads of the cover stars. Its more of a superstition.

They should put guys like Mike McMahon, Mike Bell, Keenan Mcardell on the cover so that no one would even care if they would get the curse
