Poor Gas mileage with your Hyundai Elantra...?

I don't own a Hyundai but am a mechanic. We can start off with the air filter is clogged, restriction in the exaust system, tires too small or too big, air pressure in the tires. heavy excelerations (always gunning the throttle). is thier a check engine light? Are thier any modifications to make the car run faster? All of these could have an affect on gas milage.

The mileage your getting sounds about the same as what we had on our '03 elantra. We were somewhat dissapointed also. We traded it in for a Scion Xb and what a difference in gas mileage. The Xb definetly gets 33mpg. Sorry you had to be duped. Good luck.

many things factor into fuel economy, type of gas, style of driving, heck even the position of the windows. let us start out from the beginning. a catalytic converter really does not effect fuel economy, the fact that your vehicle has one, along with most cars since the '70s actually decreases fuel economy. ignition timing has to be set to the point that you still have a flame after the exhaust valve opens up. this is done to heat the cat. this is why the electric cat would be a good idea. the amount of energy lost to that idea is nominal.

maintenance can be another issue. at 43k not too much should have been done yet, but worth checking into if you are looking for answers. the air filter would be my first thought. a dirty or restricted air filter will defiantly increase fuel consumption. do you use the ac allot, the engine has to work harder to supply power to that, do you roll the windows down? this effects the aerodynamics of a vehicle. these are awfully basic, i know. on the freeway, along trip, my fuel economy approaches about 40mpg at 234,600 miles in a '90 Honda civic.

I don't have an '03, but I do have an '01, and I get something like 27-33 mpg (lower number city, higher number highway). A lot of it depends on how you drive, your transmission, etc. Automatic transmissions tend to get less mpg than manual trans (stick shift). I don't know what kind of transmission you have, but if you have a manual trans, which I have, how you drive it (in lower gear vs. higher gear, etc.) may be a factor. Also, make sure your fuel line is clean and clear, and also look at other factors the above respondents have brought up (e.g. windows, AC especially).

I own an 02 GLS and I get 30 mpg...I change the oil regularly, the plugs, the filters, and I don't drive like Mario Andretti. Mine's an automatic also. I don't know why yours is so low unless it was abused in a former life (not uncommon, especially if a teenager was driving it).

When was the last time that you had a complete 4-wheel alignment done. I have seen many vehicles that drive straight but after checking the alignment it is off, after resetting the vehicle to specs the owners will call me back and tell me that their gas mileage has increased.

Is your car a standard or auto,get them to check the 02 sensors there are two of them,your car should have a 5spd in 5th gear on the highway the engine RPM should be about 2500rpm at 60mph if it deviates from this approximation by a lot take it to someone who cares about customer satisfaction
