I've met Pete Rose in Philadelphia many years ago. I can tell you that I've never met a more self centered, arrogant SOB in my life. He is a very unpleasant human being with little regard for those around him. It's all about him and no one else. My youngest son was a big Pete Rose fan. He was only 7 years old at the time. He had all the Pete Rose "stuff", jersey, hat, glove, bat, you name it. After that meeting my son never wore his Pete Rose jersey again nor did he keep the other Pete Rose items.
You cannot justify cheating. You cannot use the pizza and root beer scenario compared to what Rose did. He knowingly broke the cardinal sin of baseball and should never be allowed into the hall of fame. As a human being he lacks integrity. "A Bad Person".

First of all the best player in history is The Babe a .342 CAREER BA + a 2.28 career E.R.A. puts him in a class by himself
Second of all Rose didn't make one or two mistakes , he made it a way of life .Every time he saw that " No gambling allowed " sign when he walked into the clubhouse AND he did see it every time he walked into the clubhouse , Pete Rose said to himself "Those rules don't apply to me "
In a non-baseball environment ,people that think like that are called criminals and in time they will all wind up in jail.
Section 5 of The Rules of Election to The National Baseball Hall of Fame by the BBWAA reads:
Voting- Voting shall be based upon the player's record-Yes , playing ability- Yes, integrity NO, character NO, sportsmanship NO and contributions to the team(s) for which he played-Yes
According to my math ,Petey doesn't meet half of the voting requirements.
By the way as a former LL coach, if I saw other coaches gambling on games , I would do whatever I could to make sure that they lost their jobs.
Coaches are role- models and if they don't take that responsibility seriously , then they should not be coaching kids.

no. pete rose probably doesn't belong in the top ten to twenty baseball players of all time. keep in mind this is a highly subjective question -- and you'll receive many different answers from many different eras. it's very difficult to compare modern players with their historical counterparts because the game has changed so dramatically over time.
any of the following are widely believed to be much better...
ty cobb
babe ruth
mickey mantle
ted williams
willie mays
hank aaron
rogers hornsby
tris speaker
lou gehrig
foxx, f.robinson, ott....
my point is the list ahead of pete rose is rather large...and all this with no mention of pitchers....his only upsides are his notoriety, longevity, and aggressiveness.

He's possibly the best hitter of all time (Ty Cobb and Ted Williams are also in that conversation), and he played with reckless abandon every time he took the field. The best overall player of all time, though? This is a fickle question, as this is trying to sum up 140+ years of history and two different player types (pitcher and fielder). It's nearly impossible to say, without basing the decision only on personal opinion, that one player is the best of all-time. That being said, in my personal opinion, I feel as though Sandy Koufax is the best player of all-time. His dominance over his short career is something that no player can ever come close to achieving.

i definately agree with you! pete rose is known as the "hit king". he is the best pure hitter in the game and there isn't any reason he shouldn't be in the HOF. there are plenty guys out there that broke rules of baseball and other sports for that matter. i can almost guarantee that jordan bet on bball and even his team...when he was playing. look at what torrii hunter has recently done and what are you saying should happen to him...there is no way he should get off easy for breaking a HUGE mlb rule. if you live in cincy or anywhere near, go to the reds hall of fame and check out the pete rose exhibit. the reds hall of fame is the best thing west of cooperstown. also off the subject, griffey needs to retire as a red and have his number retired with all the other immortal reds!!!

Pete Rose, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Barry Bonds...the list goes on.
If you cheat (and Barry and the others WILL be found out) you should NOT get into the HOF. Period. He bet on his OWN TEAM. We're not talking "little league for some pizza". Paying customers came to his MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL game and he was fixing the results.
Realize what he did, please! Yes, he was awesome. Yes, he put up some astounding numbers. HE IS A CHEATER AND A LIAR.Plain and simple.

Pete Rose the best, may be. I think he is the most strong minded for sure.
There has been so many good players that I don't dare to pick out one as the best.
Good luck in your search.

Rose broke a rule -- a long-standing, well-known, and absolutely critical rule -- and he knew it, and continues to endure the defined sanction of permanent ineligibility. (That he then denied his rulebreaking through 14 years of serial lying doesn't really make him look better, as well.)
Rose filed for reinstatement with MLB in 1997, so it is well past time that Kommissar Seligula make a ruling on his petition. That ruling should be "No".
Rose's bed is of his own making.

Pete Rose is a miserable human being. He deserves everything that he has and has gotten. If they reverse the ban on him I will quit Baseball as a fan. 'Nuff said

Not the best, no. My coaches never bet each other in Little League. You are insane.
