Suggestions and experiences with adding new sky light in Spanish tile roof?

I live in Phoenix, Arizona and have been thinking about having one or two skylights (roughly 2x4 feet) added to my livingroom to get some more natural light. I would not want them to open, but would like those remote-control shades to cover them in summer.

The house is single story with a medium-pitch Spanish tile roof built in the early 1990s. The livingroom ceiling follows the roof (ie: no attic above, etc). There are no skylights now, so they would have to be put in from scratch.

Anybody had any experiences with this sort of thing? What would the cost range be? What brands of skylight are recommended (or to be avoided). Do I have to worry more about leaks, etc since they were not part of the original roof? Any special issues with having a tile roof?

Thanks!

I work for 3 day blinds and I have seen many sky lights they are very nice but they do have there pros and cons. For that location where you live it does get really hot and skylight are not a good thing when it comes to sunlight. Also think about where you are planing to install the skylight and look at how the sun would be shinning in. Also think about the glare you might have in the room, take into consideration about glares on tv, computer monitor and furniture which the sun would bleach out even on your floors. it is very expensive to have skylight installed in your home and also to have the skylight to be covered with a window treatment. I also have notice homes are allot warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. Make sure if your planning to have it installed get double pane windows and a tint

are you thinking of doing this your self or getting a contractor? if you have no experience w/ this sort of thing (carpentry, roofing ect.) I'd say don't do it yourself, if it leaks , not an ez fix! get a good contractor and they can do just about anything you want. price ? locatoin(state) ,size(ft) 2-7 grand
