Are you giving to the needy?
Many people in Africa are forced to survive on the 2 gallons of water per day, close to the average water wasted one a single flush of a toilet (World Vision).
The WHO says that people need a minimum of 5 gallons of water for use a day to stay healthy. Many in Africa survive on less than half that.
If we could provide good, clean water to people in need, we could solve so many of the problems in poverty-stricken nations. Disease, malnutrition and discontent would dicrease, and therefore violence would decrease as well.
It doesn't cost us much. My question to you all is this: are you giving to the needy and what do you donate your money to?

Yes, I contribute to christian groups and sponsor a total of 24 beautiful children. Several are from the United States and others are from South America, Carribian, Middle East and Africa. I have done this since 1974 and have found it a wonderful experience. I think we have an obligation to help those that are poor, especially children. Children are the ones who can change the future.
Would love to hear from other sponsors. I will respond to negative comments too, since I hear them all the time.

I live in Africa, on the Southern tip. I am privilleged to have clean running water most of the time because our city officials haven't run off with most of the budget money like they have in other towns. Some people have to buy their drinking water bottled if they can afford to because occasionally we find maggots in it but I just boil mine (the water not the maggots :)
My advice to you would be that you need to change the mind set of the people in power in African countries otherwise they'll thank you for your kind donations and disappear with the funds meant for upliftment of the people, then come begging for more. It's always the masses who suffer under these corrupt governments and then they (the governments) play on the heartstrings of compassionate firstworld individuals (like you) with heartbreaking statistics (which are true) and you keep giving more but Africa still sits in the depths of war and disease. Trust me, I know, I live here and it saddens me everyday when the orphan rate due to AIDS is through the roof but we try to set up orphanages and foster homes and the governement have SO much red tape that we have to close them down.
Sorry for the rambling, but bottom line is this: find a reputable private charity who is doing work here in Africa and then find out how to donate money to them so you know where your money is going.

We never forget the Disabled American Veterans and the cost of Freedom. The other causes are very important too though one needs to make a choice and remain faithful to it to make any difference. A Veteran of war will not forget the fallen heroes.
We also remember the Salvation Army because they do distribute so much to those who really need. What pleasure it is to visit their kitchens with a new supply of food and supplies. Everyone should adopt a cause to support, it balances the space we take up in this life.

I applaud you for being an idealist, but you're also implying that if we do not give to the needy we are bad people. I help when I can, but not because I am made to feel guilty about not helping the millions of people starving to death in the world.

I give to the local GoodWill, and I know that many people around the world are suffering, but I choose to give in my local community.

Charity is post-maintenance.
We need to focus on pre-maintenance as well, such as advocating human rights.
