Wot would make a child exclaim to their charge "oooh! That man looks scary"?

Question

I was walking back to my car yesterday after putting my lottery ticket on, when i rounded a corner, a young child of about 8 who was walking towards me with their charge sounded a noise as if they were startled or surprised then turned to them and said "that man looks scary!"  I'd be the first to admit that i'm not exactly classicly good looking. Five foot nine, twelve an a half stone with collar length blond hair and a goatee beard, but scary....

There was obviously something about you to that child that looked scary! I've heard my children say that before about people they see on TV and out in public (All though I hope the people they've said it about in public didn't hear it!) and to me, they don't look scary at all!
Kids are just different. They see people different then adults do. And sometimes it's because of what they've been told by their parents to look out for in a stranger. I'm not condoning that and saying it's ok, because for me I tell my children a stranger is a stranger, be weary of all of them! But they still seem to be frightened more by a man with long hair or a beard. I wouldn't take too personal!

I just have to laugh ... I have terrible trouble with the British measurement system, so I can't even imagine if you are tall or short, and fat or thin! 
But I think I can put your mind at ease: lots of little children find long hair and beards intimidating. In addition, you appeared suddenly, so that must have added to the effect.
