What is a good decorating idea for a 6 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl?
My boyfriend and I have been living together for about 2 1/2 yrs and we cant really agree on the best decoration for our kids. I have a boy-6 and he has a girl-3. They have to share a room for now until we can get the house sold and buy a bigger one. This has been a source of real stress for us so any good suggestions would be appreciated. :-)

I have a 4 year old boy and a 2 1/2 year old girl who share a room. We recently re-did their room so that they could both have their own things. 2 walls of the room are pink with white sponged over them and bright yellow trim. The other 2 walls are a very pale blue with white sponged over them and a grey trim. 2 of the walls have windows on them and each child has their own window trimmed in their colors with their names in wooden letters (painted to match) over their windows. My daughter's pink decorations are all over her pink walls and my son's Spiderman posters and stuff are all over his walls. One of his walls also includes the closet and the bedroom door so they are all done in his colors with his decorations. Both heads of the bed are on a pink wall BUT he has his wall starting right next to his bed with all of his posters and stuff.
It worked out really cool and we have gotten a lot of compliments on it. They each have all of their own things and their own stuff. My son even got to pick what kind of light switch plate because it is on his wall (he chose a base ball one). I'm really big on decorative painting and with the white sponged over the 2 primary colors it makes them blend really well and almost seamless.
My daughter also has her pink and yellow flowery bedding to match and my son has his blue and grey spiderman bedding to match. I know blue and pink are the typical "sexist" colors but my baby girl had a pink and yellow room before they started to share so we carried that on through to this one and my son wanted blue and grey. They like having the same amount of wall space too, it was much easier than painting down the middle of the walls.
You can always go with a generic theme, of course, like others have suggested but I wanted my kids to feel like the space they had was really their own space. Plus, we will be living here for a VERY long time and it's easy to adjust the decorations and bedding to those colors as they grow OR it's easy to paint over if necessary because they are both light colors.

I have a 3 yr old daughter and a 6 month old son sharing the same room. I had the same problem coming up with a decorating plan. My first idea was fish. Also like someone else said jungle, or farm. All kids tend to like animals. My personal feeling is you dont need to do alot to kids rooms though, they grown out of things so fast. Just a few decals maybe a couple pictures or posters, and a neat sheet set and that should be good.

How about some non-sexist theme that any kid would like- for instance animals, zoo theme, or perhaps rainforest? kids that age have alot of stuffed animals and these would fit in nicely. maybe a circus or other "activity" based theme. Primary colors are bright and lively.... and include the children- let it be an experience in cooperation and sharing - they will be less likely to complain if you can point out later- there's the tree you desined or picked out etc. GL

I would do it in what they liked b/c its there room...Let them each have a wall and decorate it with what they enjoy unless u want it all the same then I would go with Peter Pan since its for both boy and girl..Fish themes might be good, but thats better for a bathroom...My little girl is 3 and she has her room done in Princess...My son is only and his room is done in Cars as in the movie...Thats what they like and thats what I did it in...They r the ones that sleep in it...

if you are planning on moving anyway then don't waste time and money and a huge room makeover. Some accents in a neutral interest they share would be great. Example Sesame Street bedding, removable decals on the wall, maybe a simple wall paper border going around the room.

I did my son's room in a fishing theme (wild life kind of fishing) and got a wooden fish that looks like a fishing tackle. I used that for the "pull" on the ceiling fan/ light. You could do something similiar with a little army tank toy. You can also do the curtains in camo. Don't over-do it though. By painting army green &/or tan walls, you can just accessorize and make it look really cool.

Paint the room light blue halfway up and the top half white. Then go to Walmart, get a border of puppies or something both of them like and put it in the middle so it's on both the light blue and the white. Very inexpensive and cute! Did my daughter's room like that and she loves it.

Something like a jungle or a farm theme which will work for both of them. Also if they like a certain cartoon show you could do that. Or like Peter Pan...His side can have peter and the lost boys and hers could have tinker bell

Blue, Light green, Peach, Yellow, or white wallpaper and a darker or lighter shade of carpet. Or if you want themes you could have a farm, jungle, space, beach, or any outdoorsy theme

get something both kids like... for example, Disney's character, in every Disney's movies there are always little boy stuff and little girl.... my son loves cars right now so i can use that as an example.... there is sally, who is the girl car and then there is lightening.... good luck
