    Well there is two possibilities. He is a genuinely good guy who believes he is looking out for your best interests or he wants you and this is the hint. Yes the whole idea of him saying this is silly , but a clear indication of feeling

    I think that is one of the stupid-est things...my boy did that to me. But deep down they really want to be with you and cant stand the thought of another guy taking his place. So if he can get you to not be interested and not give them ideas, they feel no competition and no need to step up his game...you know?
