What's the difference between the words gray and grey? What makes for their proper use?
I'm a old man, and never could understand the difference or proper use of these two words. I've searched the web, and as an example Die.com pretty well uses both the same way. If that is correct, then are there other words that mean the same thing but spelled different?
There and their are pronunced the same, but have different meanings. So clue this old codger in on correctness.

The pronunciation and meaning of the words are exactly the same. Grey is the spelling of the word in "Queen's" English, where gray is the "American" English spelling. If you're Canadian, spelling of a lot of words can be confusing, as we have adopted many American spellings of words that we use.

This question was asked here not too long ago, and from most of the answers, it seems that, more than anything else, the Brits use "grey" and us Americans use "gray". Some people say that "gray" is never used as a proper name, but again, that is not true in America, as I have relatives who are Grays, and there are lots of them around.

No difference. It's just a different name for the same breed. In the United States they're known as German Shepherd Dogs. In Europe they'rer known as Alsatians.

Gray is usually a family name. Grey or Gray is the color. Nobody will care which one you use for the color / colour. This is how language and spelling change.
I just looked it up in 4 dictionaries, and none claimed that either is particularly American or British....hmmm.

British spelling and American. Both mean the same thing. Most Americans use gray. Think of flavor and flavour.

They're both correct and they mean the same thing. Grey is just a variation of gray.

I personally use gray for the color and Grey for a name. However either one is correct for the color or the name. I suppose it's like the word curb\kerb.

gray is the american version of the word whereas grey is the british or english form of the same word

They mean the same thing i.e. a colour.
But:
gray = american spelling
grey = british spelling
