My son has been potty-trained for a few weeks with no accidents, but got sick. Is it normal to regress?

    yep

In fact - when my daughter got sick once she regressed in a LOT of areas - became a REALLY picky eater, more clingy for attention (not usually a cuddler, so I knew something was up)

It actually took about a week until she started coming back to her normal self... a week AFTER she was done being sick.

Even without the sickness, I'm told that kids do go through regressive phases... and anecdotally I'm told this happens more with boys.

Patience and understanding... he'll get it.

As someone once told me... "not too many 16 year olds out there not potty trained" ;)

    good luck!

Yes, it is normal. It is also normal for a child that has been potty trained for a long time to regress if there is a new baby in the home.

Sure, accidents happen with an illness. We recently moved and one of our kids went back to having accidents. It's going to be okay. I made a chart with days of the week and give them stickers for a dry day, lots of cheering and hurrays, too.

Just remind them to go, reward them with stickers for staying dry. After a certain number of days, if they have "enough" stickers for staying dry then they get a reward like going out for lunch, art supplies, or small toy.

I make everything positive with them. And my mantra is this: even ONE drop is going pee pee, so let's try for just one drop in the toilet, please. Works every time and of course they pee more than one drop. I also make everyone try to pee before we go anywhere, when they wake up, after meals. The after meals thing is a huge deal at our house, they must wash their hands, too. Some new handsoaps could help things along. "Go pee pee and use your new teddy bear hand soap"- type of thing. I also bought my kids rubbermaid stools to keep in their bathrooms so they can reach the sink for handwashing and toothbrushing. We are having great success with the little stools, new hand soaps and charting progress with stickers.

Best of luck to you mama. It'll get better soon.

It's normal. I would just use a pull up for now. If a kid is sick and they go to sleep they may be so exhausted that they sleep deeper. Also if diarrhea is involved then it may be hard to get there in time. They may just feel like they have to toot or they may just be too exhausted to get there.

Yes, especially after being sick. Don't worry, he will soon learn again.
