As far as your veggie garden, about all you can do is put a high enough fence around it so they can't jump over. Scare crows and other shiny things hanging on sticks work for awhile, but soon they get used to them and are no longer fearful. They are very persistent.
Hair is said to work...but it doesn't work around here. The deer we have in Michigan aren't afraid of anything. They stamp and snort at our dogs when they bark at them and don't run until the dogs get too close.
I've read before that coffee grounds can work, but tried it and it didn't work for us. Evidently our deer have developed a taste for coffee, because they still continued to chomp away! The best solution for us was to cover the plantings that attracted them with plastic mesh made for this purpose. We keep it in place all winter and remove it when the bushes start to develop buds. The deer don't seem to bother things in warm weather...too many other good things to graze on out there.

Coffee is acidic so in large amounts it will change your soil pH.
Coffee Grounds N-P-K 2-0.3-0.2
They are a minor source of calcium & magnesium. Use no more than 1lb/100 sq ft unless on acid loving plants

It is best for use in alkaline soils. However you can compost it to neutralize the acidity or mix your own fertilizer with it.
4 parts coffee ground
1 part bone meal
1 part wood ashes
Coffee is acidic while wood ashes are basic so this is a balanced use of the two.
Can you go to a zoo and get bags of lion feces? Some zoos sell these. Our Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, for instance, offers raw dung for just a $1 a sack.
The only sure way to eliminate deer damage is to fence the deer out. A wire-mesh fence is effective if it is solidly constructed and at least 8 feet high. Electric fencing also helps reduce damage.

Coffee grounds will keep small animals like rodents, cats and dogs away, but deer won't be bothered. The best way to keep deer away is to go to a local hair salon and ask to gather up a bag of hair clippings - they'll be happy to give them! Sprinkle the hair clippings throughout your garden, and this will usually keep deer away - or, you can clean out all your brushes as an alternative. Deer don't like the "human" scent of the hair - organic scents like coffee don't really bother them.
On the plus side, the coffee grounds will make wonderful fertilizer for your veggies!

where i live we have a lot of deer, and not very much fools them. just because you read the book doesnt mean they did. we tried every concoction we could. human hair, what i finally did that worked was put a nettingaround my flowers like a fence. now we had to put a cage like fence around the garden. it was too irresistable for them. coffee grnds actually just smell like cooked food. depending how populated your area is depends on how used to people the deer are. some things work if the deer havent been as exposed to people.

the only problem may be the deer who need decafinated coffee.. I would be worried about all the traffic accidents caused by the animals in the road from the caffine high... Might not be good...

No!. Try moth balls and human hair. Add some hot sauce to the leaves of the plants. Deer are not fond of hot sauce and the scent of human hair bothers them.

Human hair!!! It sounds gross and lets be honest it is but non the less hair has the sent of humans on it!! and will scare of the animals. You can ask the people where you get your hair cut for a bag of hair. ( They would have swept it off the floor through out the day) Good Luck.

Yes, it does discourage them, but you have to drink an awful lot of coffee to get a significant amount of grounds.
