What motivates you atheists?

If you were told that you were going to live in agony every day for the rest of your life, OR that a brain injury would keep you from ever expriencing pleasure again - what would motivate you to keep living?

Update:

rlrose: I don't assume that. Some of the most generous people I know are atheists.

It is a tendency of most of the folks I know and love who are atheists to find that life is only about their 5 senses.

I do know a guy who has this problem. It drove him to faith. I know another guy with a similar problem who started as a believer and he is struggling to live by faith.

It was only a question.

Glad to see so many atheists are family people out there.

Why do you religious people assume that atheists are all selfish people who live only for themselves?

I am motivated by my family, my love for life itself, the very act of breathing and hearing my own heart beat. I'm motivated by the love I feel for my son, my own flesh and blood. I'm motivated by the fact that others on this earth might need me and may miss me if I'm gone.

I'm not selfish enough to think that if I'm in pain, I might as well die. I'm sorry that you feel that way about your own life. How sad you must be.

The beauty of a sunset on a fall afternoon.

The stars on a clear winter night.

The sounds of a Bach fugue.

The smell of honeysuckle or chocolate fudge.

    The feel of corduroy.

    My dog's wagging tail.

    My cat's purr.

And the realization that I am doing no more than every other living human being, for all life includes challenges. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

I want to live, and I want to understand anything and everything. I can do that in agony and without pleasure...I can not however, do that if I am dead.

the hardships themselves would motivate me...i don't want to be a coward and commit suicide or anything because i know i have the courage to go through anything ,and also that, that courage is WITHIN me and i would feel proud of myself at the end of the day for battling my troubles :)
