I'm a Liberal Atheist mom of one child... patriot, scrapbooking artist, dreamer, American and frustrated with the world today. Why am I an atheist? Here's why: "I am an atheist, out and out. It took me a long time to say it. I've been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say that one is an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn't have. Somehow it was better to say one was a humanist or agnostic. I don't have the evidence to prove that God doesn't exist, but I so strongly suspect that he doesn't that I don't want to waste my time." -- Isaac Asimov For more great atheistic quotes, visit http://www.atheismquotes.com/ .

  • What is "cross body blocking"?

This is a term on my medical transcription word list and I can see it is banned from use in football, but can someone explain to me what the maneuver entails and how it is dangerous? Thanks!

  • Does this news story illustrate the non-violent nature of Islam?

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUKTRE49R...

KISMAYU, Somalia - Somali Islamists have stoned to death a woman accused of adultery in the first such public killing by the militants for about two years, witnesses said.

The 23-year-old woman was placed in a hole up to her neck for the execution late on Monday in front of hundreds of people in a square of the southern port of Kismayu, which the Islamist insurgents captured in August.

Stones were hurled at her head, and she was brought out of the hole three times to see if she had died.

When a relative and others surged forward, guards opened fire, killing a child, the witnesses said.

    ****

The article says they are Islamic extremists... but why didn't the non-extremists stop them from doing this? Not just the family... but the other dozens of people who came to watch? A non-violent people don't condone violence, either.

  • Atheists, do you donate blood or give money/time to charitable causes?

    http://www.barna.org/FlexPage.aspx?Page=BarnaUpdat...

[Nonbelievers] are less likely than active-faith Americans to be registered to vote (78% versus 89%), to volunteer to help a non-church-related non-profit (20% versus 30%), to describe themselves as "active in the community" (41% versus 68%), and to personally help or serve a homeless or poor person (41% versus 61%).

I know I donate blood regularly, have donated extensively to secular charities (American Heart Association, The Red Cross, Nature Conservancy, Oxfam Int'l), not to mention hundreds of hours at my son's school.

Compared to the religious folks, we seem to be lacking in charitable direction. What do you personally do in the community/world at large and why do you think we have this discrepancy in our level of community participation?

  • Why do I get congested and sneeze like crazy after breakfast, no matter when I eat it?

No matter what time I eat my first meal of the day, I get completely congested and sneeze about 20 times. It's not painful, but really annoying. I've noticed it happens when I eat bread (white or wheat), sometimes with eggs, rarely with cottage cheese and fruit. My doctor just said it was "interesting," but didn't see the need to do tests since it is just an annoyance and not painful or continuous.

Anyone have any idea what might be the problem? Thanks!

  • Can you suggest a manga series for an 8yo boy (English only)?

We love to buy Manga at our local Asian/Japanese store. They read back to front, right to left... they're great! I love Fruits Basket myself. My son has read the entire Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series in English and now, we are looking for another series for him... We picked up the first issue of Dragon Drive today and he likes it. We also got Naruto #1 and he said it's probably not good for him because it has nudity. LOL! (He's going through a girls have cooties phase right now and though the nudity in Naruto is nearly non-existent, the "ninja centerfold" parts bugged him.)

So... can anyone recommend a manga series that my 8yo son might like? (light cartoon/ninja violence is okay (he does taekwondo so he knows what's appropriate and what's not), no nudity or suggestive sexual situations)

    Thanks!

  • Should churches be able to endorse candidates and still be tax exempt?

    From the Wall Street Journal:

"A conservative legal-advocacy group is enlisting ministers to use their pulpits to preach about election candidates this September, defying a tax law that bars churches from engaging in politics.

"Alliance Defense Fund, a Scottsdale, Ariz., nonprofit, is hoping at least one sermon will prompt the Internal Revenue Service to investigate, sparking a court battle that could get the tax provision declared unconstitutional. Alliance lawyers represent churches in disputes with the IRS over alleged partisan activity."

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121029464937179517...

So... do you think the ban against churches endorsing candidates should be eliminated? Or do you support churches preaching politics to their congregations?

  • Are you an atheist who enjoys scrapbooking?

It's lonely being an atheist scrapbooker and I'm always looking for others who enjoy the scrapbooking hobby but aren't Christian or some other form of believer. If you're an atheist scrapbooking, speak up now!

  • My knee is swollen, tight and painful... why?

This started this past Wednesday... I just stood up in the evening and it was kinda tight. Since then, it's gotten to the point that weight-bearing is nearly impossible... it feels like it's going to explode. swollen around the outside edge, pain radiating down the back of my lower leg. Weight-bearing is increasingly painful. There is no discoloration.

I didn't injure it recent though I did fall and hurt both legs in the spring, but nothing was broken and xrays and ultrasound showed no problems at the time.

I will be going to the doctor tomorrow... but I'm researching the problem before I go. I'm anticipating another xray and perhaps another ultrasound... but I'm very worried.

Anyone have any medical knowledge along these lines?

  • How many atheists have you seen, picketing for non-belief?

When out and about today, we saw a family (mom, 3 kids and dad) all carrying signs reading "GOD IS REAL" and bible verses and "BELIEVE IN GOD OR BURN" (this was held by the youngest of the children, probably 7 or so). It made us think... how many atheists or other non-believers have we seen carrying "GOD ISN'T REAL" or some other sentiment on a sign, trying to convert believers? Or carrying signs like "ATHEISTS HATE FAGS" or some such garbage? I don't know about you, but we've seen NONE of those... but plenty of believers carrying hateful signs to convert US to their way of thinking.

Just a pondering... how many atheists have you seen, picketing for non-belief?

  • How can I get my son to embrace learning?

My son is 7 years old and gifted. He skipped 2nd grade this year. Unfortunately, he has no yearning to learn at all. He is lazy, will do only the bare minimum if that, will put off reading in favor of ANYTHING including just staring into space. It's so frustrating! We've read to him since he was an infant. He claims to love space and spy stuff, but won't even read books about that. It's like pulling teeth! Tonight was a screaming match at homework time and I'm so tired of it.

Teachers, parents... anyone... how can I help my son to embrace learning before he becomes John Bender from the "Breakfast Club"?

  • Have you taken the Blasphemy Challenge?

If so, post a link to your video. If you've posted a response in defense of your faith, post a link to that, too. I've spent a long time looking at videos on YT and I find this VERY interesting... and I wish I had a camera. LOL!

  • Secular Homeschooling Program in Oregon?

Does anyone know of a secular homeschooling coop or program in Oregon? My son is gifted and is very social, so some type of coop that meets weekly would be great. Also seeking recommendations for secular homeschooling curriculum. Thanks!

  • Do you practice responsible procreation?

Or do you believe that you are blessed even if you have 14 kids? I watched a program tonight about a family with 16 kids (now 17). I have one and cannot even CONTEMPLATE having more than 2... do you think this is responsible or a god-given right to have that many children? Does this earth matter to these people (Duggars)?
