How do you know?

When your transmission is going out? I have a 2001 Ford Focus LX 5speed. Lately it has been really sluggish when excelerating, and last night I couldn't get it to go over 60mph on the freeway. It sounds like the gears aren't shifting..

I am actually hopeing that it is the transmission because I have an extended warranty on the car and that would be covered.

What do you think? Any information will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Update:

I have records of ALL work performed on the vehicle and it only has 69,533 miles

If you have a 5 speed manual (standard) transmission, you may have burned out the clutch.

If you have in the 5th gear at 60 mph and give it the gas, the engine rpms will increase but not your speed. Same thing would occur at lower speeds and lower gears. This would indicate that your clutch is slipping.

Some clutches can be adjusted a little to compensate for wear.

If you(or a boyfriend) like to drive your car hard and shift rapidly, you most likely have worn your clutch out.

If it's under warranty, take it in and ask them.

Most warranties will not cover a worn clutch disc.

I'm not certain, but it sounds like the clutch is slipping. One of the easiest ways to see if the clutch is worn out is to see if the vehicle will start off in a gear other than first. If in taking off from rest the engine revs high, but is slow to accelerate, I'd say that the clutch worn out. In most service contacts (extended warranty) a clutch is not a covered item. In any case, you need to take to a shop to have it checked out and have the shop call the service contractor to see if the failure is covered or not. You will probably have to pay a diagnosis fee, which may or may not be covered by your extended warranty even if they cover the repair. So, be for warned, expect to have to pay something even if the failure is covered. Good luck.

Transmissions usually dont cause your car to be slugish. Are your miles high? It sounds like it could be a clogged fuel filter and dirty air filter, or a plugged catolitic converter. Good luck

You might as well take it to the place where you bought it and tell them the clutch is slipping and wont go over 60, They will test drive and tell you the problem is I am guessing clutch good luck

Stick shift??? Get the car tuned up first, including new fuel filter, and use ford parts if you can.

Take it in for service IMMEDIATELY...if you don't you may be voiding your warranty...an 01...have records of all the regular services being preformed?
