Yes, you need a visa, and usually the travel agent process it for you. If NOT you have to do it.

Visa Information
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A visa is required for Canadian visitors and most other nationalities. If there is a Chinese Embassy or Consulate General nearby your place, you can go and obtain your Chinese visa in person. Please note that the Chinese Embassy and Consulate Generals don’t receive any mailing-in services. If your place is far away, you can only send your passport to a travel agent and ask for help.
In order to complete your application, one visa application form, one passport sized photo, and appropriate application fee must be submitted along with a passport valid for 6 months beyond travel date. Visas are normally valid for three months from the date of issue, and for one month from the date of entry into China. You can extend your stay in China with the authorization of the local Public Security Bureau in China. For detailed instructions on Chinese visa application, please click here.
Please note that the China National Tourist Office provides all kinds of travel information and brochures to the public, but we DO NOT accept any Chinese visa applications.

Yes you will need a visa. If you live near a consulate you wont need the services of a China Visa Agent, but expect to drive a long distance and wait in line for awhile, it is the busy season.. Visa should cost you no more than $50 Dollars to 100 depending on the type, length of stay and service you require..
If you do not live near a consulate check out z-visa.com for China visa service..

Im no expert on visa but if it says on your visa issued by the Chinese immigration that your visa is only valid for 30 days then it probably is. But you might want to check with your agency or the policy station to confirm to avoid unnecessary hassle and disappointment
