for insurance info, check out Progressive.com or Geiko.com, you can select different levels of coverage and see what they will cost you for insurance. for a sport bike, it really depends on what you're looking for. KBB.com has used motorcycle price guides, but remember, those prices are a GUIDE and the actual value of a bike you're looking at will depend on mileage, condition, etc.
i recently bought my first sport bike, i decided it would be better to get an older 600 to learn on for a year or two, and i found a '92 Suzuki GSX600 Katana for $1700. it had minor body damage which i was able to fix myself, and it's been a great bike to learn on so far (and very reliable with no mechanical issues at all). it's not ridiculously fast, but it's fast enough that i don't get bored on it. in about a year or two, i plan on selling it and upgrading to a newer 600, but still something used. a word of caution: your "dream bike" should NOT be your first bike. if you lay down a new bike, you'll be crying yourself to sleep for a while. find something older (but not too old, preferably a 90s or early 2000s model bike) that's in good riding condition, and don't worry too much about cosmetics. just remind yourself that in a year or two, when you are experienced enough, you'll be getting that dream bike and you KNOW you won't lay it down 'cause you'll know how to ride it. during my search, i found several early to mid 1990s model 600s for under $3000. the one i really wanted was a '91 Honda 600 something-or-other, it was a sweet bike, but it was already taken so i went with the Suzuki and it's been a blast to ride.
just remember that there's no substitute for experience, and MSF courses are the greatest way to get that experience before you get on the road. the best part about them, if you fall off the bike, it's THEIR bike that's getting damaged, not yours. also, don't get retarded and think it's "cool" to ride without a helmet and jacket. if you fall off without the right gear, you'll be way less cool in the hospital with severe road rash (if you survive the crash that is).

The cost of the bike is not the issue, your insurance would run you more money than a "good bike" in the "sportbike" category.
My advice would be take a certified riding course, buy a "standard" type bike for very little money, have fun with it, learn how to maintain it and work on it. Then 1-2 yrs later go ahead and try the sportbike thing, your experience and hopefully no tickets should prove something to your insurance company...

You'll find a car cheaper. I got my first car for $200, had a major knock and ceiling liner was falling down but lasted me 6 mos before it blew up.

I've been looking myself, I think 4 to 6,000. depends how handy you are with a wrench too. most bikes over 5000 miles need something done, as far as insurance...if you have a mc license and have had mc ins before it may be less than 400 for the year. good luck.
