Technical guys who know about back ground working of computer please help.?

I have a Medion Sim 2000 lap top is a few years old now. Im running Windows Xp. It gets slow after awhile. An example is if I click on start then on My Computer it takes awhile to bring up the window for it. Or if im sufering the web the page takes forever to come through. I have run several virus scans and spyware scans with verious software packages and they come up clean. I regularly wipe the tempary internet files too. I also regularly defrag the disk. I have found nothing.

I have checked the Windows Task Manger to look for High CPU usage and apart from when Im running scans there isnt anything that sticks out. However there is a High PF Usage up to 570Mb at times. There is also a High virutal memory with some processes along with a high Page Fault count. Some have a million plus. Is my ram failing or is it the the conflicting device Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller on motherboard resources? Or is it a hidden processes thats causing this. Please Help if you can.

What you seem to be describing is how a PC behaves when it is running short of actual RAM and starts using virtual memory instead.

You don't say how much memory your PC has. Perhaps it simply dosen't have enough RAM to run XP properly. Perhaps you could use Win 2000 instead.

So what is taking up your RAM?

Try looking in the Start Menu under Programs/Start Up, to see what is there.

Run regedit and search for the keys 'Run' 'RunOnce' and 'RunOnceEx', this might give you some clues.

From the Start menu choose Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information, pick Software Environment from the tree control and look in Running Tasks, Loaded Modules and Startup Programs.

Virus checkers often take a lot of RAM.

Try disabling or uninstalling the conflicting device and see if that helps. Alternatively, buy some more RAM. There are many shops on the web which sell extra RAM.

Without knowing what you will find I cant offer much more help than that. Good luck.

Well, you have run several virus scans and spyware scans. But you cleaned your registry? It is possible that there are Corruption and Errors within your registry. The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

    http://speed-up-pc.info/index.php?t=speedpc

lists top 5 registry cleaner, from there you can download and scan for free.

    Good luck!
