What is the name of the older movie that was the basis for the Lake House?

In it, the couple exchanged letters through a writing desk, and an old post office. Toward the end of the movie, the post office burns down. I thought that the name of it was The Writing Desk, but could not find anything like that as far as movies go.

I also thought that it had Christopher Reeves in it, but that movie was Somewhere In Time, where he fell in love with a portrait & hypnotised himself to go to the past to meet her.

It may have had Jennifer Jason Leigh in it, but I could be wrong about that, too.

It did star Jennifer Jason Leigh. It's called "The Love Letter." It was a made for TV movie.

Plot: Scotty Corrigan buys an antique desk and finds a Civil War-era letter inside it, written by a woman who died over a hundred years ago. Fancifully, he writes and mails a reply...only to have it reach its destination in the past. As Elizabeth and Scotty continue their remarkable correspondence, they find themselves falling in love, and more than restless about their impending, respective, marriages.

(However "The Lake House" was actually a remake of a Korean film called "Siworae.")

The Lake House is a remake of a Korean movie called Siworae , sometimes known as IL Mare released in 2000 . Yes that's Italian but that's the name on the Korean DVD I have , and it's the name of the apartment building the characters share (not a lake house). I prefer IL Mare, but both were good.

i did no longer see the action picture however the trailer jogged my memory a good number of the Nick Bantock books approximately Griffin and Sabine from the early ninety's. the 1st 3 are in specific cases stated as "The Griffin and Sabine Trilogy". those have been the only ones I study.

I can only think of somewhere in time too...it is so sad when he pulls the penny out of his pocket and gets sent back....
