My truck is bogging out, any ideas?

Ok so my boyfriend bought a truck off is brother. All i know is that it's a 98' F150. When the truck is idling (it's automatic) it's shaky. And when driving it feels funny, especially when u get to higher speeds, very jumpy in the gears it seems. My bf thought it was the fuel pump, his brother looked at it, and said no, it wasn't the fuel pump.

I know we need to go to a mechanic but heck, this is yahoo answers!! Help please! Would be nice to have an idea of what we might be spending to get fixed.

most likely the fuel filter...that's inexpensive and easy to change...if that don't fix the problem get back with us.

Okay, so we know it's an automatic so far. What engine is in it? Is it the 4.2L V6, 4.6L V8, or 5.4L V8 engine? Do you have any "check engine" lights on? If so, does it FLASH first, before it stays on STEADY? Have you had it checked for codes? If so, do you have them? A vacuum leak, lack of sufficient fuel pressure, leaking injector, IMRC control valve troubles (V6 only), dirty or bad MAF sensor, bad spark plug(s), bad COP(s) (5.4L V8 only) are just a few possible causes. The more information provided, the better the answers we'll be able to provide. Hope this helps.

When is the last time oil change was done. Check spark plugs, make sure they're gapped right and not burnt. Check air filter, make sure its clean. Next gas fillup, use a fuel injector cleaner. Feels funny how when you drive?

    Is it the inline 6 motor or the 4.6L V8, 5.4L V8 ?

Dirty carb/fuel injectors, possibly plugs, could be many things. Buy some carb/injector cleaner (gas additives) and change the plugs/wires. Even if it doesn't fix the problems, it's still good to do when buying a used car.

i own a shop and it could be any thing from a fuel filter to a tune up needed on it,you really need to have it checked out, before you start spending money on it,buying things you don't need for it can and will get real expensive ,good luck with it.

I would change plugs, plug wires, air filter, distributor cap and rotor and see if it make a difference. It sound to me like it may be cross firing between two or more plug wires which is making it run rough. Hard to tell without putting my hands on it though. Hope this helps a little. ;-)
