negative skew?
suggestions please for parameterised distributions that I can try to fit something to ... like a normal curve with the summit pulled a little to the right with "endpoints" fixed.. i.e. gradually rising on the left, falling more sharply on the right.

With one endpoint (defined for x > 0) check out variations of the Gamma distribution. You can shift it sideways (x > a) and/or flip the endpoint to the other side (x < a). And that is in addition to playing with the parameters.
With two fixed endpoints (defined for 0 <= x <= 1), look at the Beta distribution. Again, shifting and scaling is possible.
In the plots at the referenced sites, some parameter choices lead to nicely skewed distributions.
