In your opinion what are the top 5 books on Home Schooling.?

We have home schooled for several years, and read a great many books on this subject.

We have seen Home schooling grow tremendously over the years, and with it the market on Home school books.

Granted we all have our favorites, however if you had to recommend some of these books to new home school families, which ones would be at the top of your list, and why.

(excluding curriculums or unit studies).

    1. "So You're Thinking About Homeschooling" by Lisa Whelchel

-It describes the various ways and reasons for home schooling in an entertaining and informative way. The appendix also has lots of resources for further home schooling information.

    2. "Homeschooling and the Voyage of Self-Discovery" by David Albert

-This is a collection of essays based on talks he has given for various homeschooling and educational groups. The essays on Flow theory and race issues really changed my whole perspective on how I see the world.

    3. "The Underground History of American Education" by John Taylor Gatto

-This is a study of historically why schools are the way that they are and what their intended purpose was. This book will make you question your whole existence as a product of traditional schooling.

    4. Morning by Morning by Paula Penn-Nabrit

-Mrs. Penn-Nabrit details her and her husband's decision to homeschool their three sons and their methods of doing so. All three of her sons were accepted by Ivy League Universities. While their reasons and methods differ from my own, it was still a very enlightening read. It was also interesting to see an African-American perspective.

    5. So-Why Do You Homeschool? by Mimi Davis

-This is a bare bones introduction to homeschooling in a question and answer format. It covers all of the major issues and myths.

    Curriculum Mention: Singapore Math

Although I have never read it myself, I often recommend Mary Pride's book, _Mary Pride's Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling_, simply on the strength of her name and the description of the book. It appears to be a good overview of what is involved in homeschooling, including learning styles and many different homeschooling methods (classical, unit studies, etc.) It looks like a great overview for someone considering homeschooling (wish I'd had it when *I* first started looking!)

My second choice would be _The Well-Trained Mind_ by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. This is the one book that gave me the confidence to jump in and try it. Great for someone who is thinking of a classical education.

Third would be Cathy Duffy's _100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum_ or Rebecca Rupp's _Home Learning, Year-by-Year_. Great for someone who has already decided to homeschool but needs some guidance in choosing curricula.

Fourth would be anything by John Holt, John Taylor Gatto, Grace Llewellyn, or Raymond and Dorothy Moore. Just great resources for giving someone confidence that they *need* to do this.

Finally, any compilation of descriptions of homeschooling families (such as Lisa Whelchel's _So You're Thinking About Homeschooling_ or _Real-Life Homeschooling:..._ by Rhonda Barfield). It shows that every homeschool family is different, so yours doesn't have to conform to someone else's image.

Boy! that was tough! I know I listed more than five, but there are so many great resources available now (compared to even five years ago).

Help for the Harried Homeschooler Author's last name is Field. This book is far and away the BEST resource for my home school. I have referred to it many times and have found much help.

Homeschooling on a Shoestring Author?? Just good advice

I have skimmed many others but I just keep going back to the first book I mentioned.

The Teenage Liberation Handbook--This book is about unschooling. It is really inspirational and I love it!

Real Lives-- same as above, but I like the first book best.

    Teach Your Own--Also about unschooling.

No more books come to mind at the moment as most of the books that I've read about homeschooling I read about a year ago, when we were first getting started.
