i recently got dentures, but i have no idea how to clean them.?
I know to brush them, but that doesnt remove plaque. Can you use those wire pick things that i used to use on my own teeth, to scrape the plaque off, or does it scratch them?

Dentures are made of a porous plastic, if they were magnified they would look like a sponge. Bacteria, yeast and fungus all get in those little spaces and compete for their food which is starch or protein. To keep those little critters population down clean your dentures at least every 12 hours, more is better. Don't use a toothbrush, the bristles are either too tough or too sharp, use a facecloth. A brush will dull the shinny finish in about 6 months. That dull finish is caused by microscratches which will provide a Grand Canyon size home for more microcritters. Plaque is the slimmy stuff and will come off with a good cleaner (POLYDENT etc.). The buff coloured stuff is calculus and is a protective coating produced by the microcritters. Some soakers will get it off some won't. Try different ones. If you can't get it off by soaking repeatedly have your dentures cleaned and repolished by a denturist, dentist or dental lab. DON'T SCRAPE STUFF OFF!! Deep scratches make great homes for microcritters.
Rince and wipe away all gross debris from your denture after every meal. Do it over a sink half full with water just incase you drop them. Use a soaking product made for dentures, read the lable some will damage metal partials, don't use bleach it will weaken the plastic over a year and cause breakage.
Give your mouth a rest, remove your dentures at night and let them soak in cleaning solution or water. Would you wear tight shoes to bed? Poor circulation and smelly feet right? Same with your mouth, good circulation means healthy tissues. Save the brush for your gums, keep then clean and healthy too!

As much as possible every after meal, if you can wash your denture, please do. Do not use toothpaste in washing your denture. Use your dishwashing liquid when washing your denture. Why? Because the denture is either made up of plastic, metal or rubber. And using a toothpaste on your denture is just like using a toothpaste when you wash a plastic/metal/rubber food container. The oil from food cannot be removed, right? In case there are hardened plaque already, there are cleansing tablets for dentures available where you can soak it over night. It might soften the plaque.
Good Luck and happy denture cleaning!

Brushing WILL remove the plaque....its the calculus ( tartar ) that is tough to remove...if you allow the plaque to lay on your denture, it will harden and turn into tartar...so if you brush your denture on a daily basis, and remove all the plaque, you will not allow the tartar to form... you should be able to keep them nice and clean this way...You obvioulsy cannot floss a denture since there is no space between the teeth...but your dentist most likely gave you a denture brush which is much harder than a regular toothbrush...use it daily and you will find that your denture remains clean...The soaks dont really clean your denture..old fashioned brushing is the key...The only thing you really need to soak your denture in is water overnight.....unless you want it to taste more fresh, you can use alternatives...GOOD LUCK TO YOU

First of all you don't use regular toothpaste, it's too abrasive and will scratch your denture, use a soft bristle toothbrush, they have products on the dental isle in the denture section such as "Fresh Cleanse" this stuff is a foam and it smells so clean and keeps you fresh for up to 5 hours, then there is your choice of soaking cleansers such as "polident" "Smokers polident" if you smoke or even if you don't you can soak for 15 minutes to overnight and they will come out sparkling clean, I don't think that you can use a pick well maybe a waterpick, as for floss yes you can use that but it will only go so far up into your teeth, then "SeaBond" has a "denture tooth polish" and it really makes them shine .
Source(s): I have dentures as of March 30th 2007 and I have been to denture isle and practically have tried everything they sell for dentures/and tea, coffee and colas will stain them so you need to use the soaker tabs to remove stains. - Anonymous7 years ago
Rinse and brush your dentures in clean, warm water with a denture brush.
-When cleaning dentures, don't brush too hard; you don't want to damage any plastic or metal parts of the dentures. If needed, moisten the denture brush to avoid damages or scratches to the denture surface.
-Brush your gums, tongue, and natural teeth with a fluoride toothpaste, such as Crest®, before reinserting -your dentures. This will help remove plaque from your teeth, stimulate circulation in your mouth, and help maintain good oral health.
-After brushing, rinse with a mouthwash, such as Scope®, to give your mouth a refreshed feeling.
-Never try to adjust your dentures yourself. This might cause harm to your mouth or damage to your dentures.

You can brush and use floss like you would with real teeth. You can also get tablets that dissolve in water, while it's fizzing you put your dentures into the water. Sometimes we use them instead for people who don't like the taste of toothpaste.

usually with the dentures they give a fluid in which you are supposed to keep the dentures when you don't need them.
