Are you good at math? Then figure this easy little math problem.?

which emits more CO2 into the atmosphere, volcanoes or humans?

Comparison of CO2 emissions from volcanoes vs. human activities.

Scientists have calculated that volcanoes emit between about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (Gerlach, 1999, 1991). This estimate includes both subaerial and submarine volcanoes, about in equal amounts. Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006). Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)

    Three issues here:

1 - Volcanic activity increases and decreases over a long cycle (if it is cyclic at all...) The earth can and has probably dealt with this with no significant issues.. unless you were a dinosaur?

2 - Man is increasing emissions without increasing the absorption rate by planting more trees, keeping rain forests, etc.

3 - Rich nations say "lets cut emissions world-wide" BUT this strategy essentially cuts-off developing nations. It is like saying, I got mine, but you are not allowed to get yours because it is bad. And, by the way, we get to keep it!

So, developing nations will continue to cut rain forests, burn coal, etc., so we can have cheap products made in factories where forests used to stand, where rivers used to run and using coal that creates acid rain on US.

Folks, the only way to cut overall global emissions is for developed nations to basically cut back GREATLY while still allowing developing nations to use fuels. Only when their infrastructures have matched ours, would they be ready to convert to less invasive fuels.

Anyone going to say yes to that one?

  • Humans produce more CO2, but the issue is rather more complex than that as mcuh of the CO2 released by undersea vocanoes (of which there are far more than those on land) is fixed in the oceans by vent feeding microorganisms, and enters into a deepsea ecosytem in which plants and autotrophic bacteria utilize the C)2 in photosynthesis. In contrast, human activity tends to reduce the number of plants able to fix this CO2 (can anyone say deforestation?) thus magnifying the amount of CO2 made available to the atmosphere.

    Kinda sucks, doesn't it?

    Bus driver has 2 legs. Each girl has 2 legs. 7 * 2 = 14 + 2 = 16 That is 16 legs for all of the people now for the tricky part. 7 backpacks with 7 cats in each. 7 * 7 big cats = 49 big cats. 49 * 4 legs = 196 + 16 legs = 212 legs so far. 7 little cats for each big cat so 49 * 7 = 343 little cats. 343 * 4 legs = 1372 + 212 legs = 1584 legs.

A question like this is bound to have answers flowing in at a high rate. (Sorry, couldn't pass up the "punny".)

It is obvious to me and anyone else who really thinks about it, that the billions of people on Earth are affecting the amount of CO2; I don't see how or why anyone disputes this. How has this become such a political hot-button? You would think that we would all like to be good stewards of the very planet that sustains our lives!

Yes, the humans produce more CO2 emissions,so why can't we produce more ozone O3 into the atmosphere like lighting does during a storm.

  • 1 decade ago

Of course, there is the problem that we are putting more and more CO2 into the atmosphere, and the volcanoes still do their thing.

I didnt know that but it's a neat fact to learn. I think we could do more to help the situation but people just dont care about what is happening to the world, or how our actions will effect the world long after we are gone.

From my knowledge and the scientist's calculations, i would have to say humans. after all, we use cars, run factories, and we do use a lot of electricity. This all leads to smog, which is causing air pollution and global warming.

well.......27 billion is bigger than 230 mllion so.....humans emit more. then again, there ARE humans who are trying to do something about it. but then AGAIN volcanic soil is great for crop growth, but then AGAAAIN, humans were given the power to create and destroy. oh but wait so were volcanoes...........dammit we ARE volcanoes! crud!

But all these statistics mean nothing if those who are our "leaders" feel that there is no problem.
