I have a hard time sleeping through the night. Why can't I sleep all night anymore?
They say it's normal to wake up during the night, but aren't I supposed to be able to go right back to sleep? I take blood pressure medicine, but one of the side effects is drowsiness. I feel drowsy during the day from lack of sleep.

I'm sure you've heard all of the things like limiting caffeine, warm milk, etc etc, so I won't go there. All I can tell you is that, as a former insomniac (started off as waking during the night and descended into not being able to sleep at all), one of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to avoid my bed at all times unless I was planning on going to sleep. That means no watching TV in bed, no reading, no eating, nothing. Basically, this trains your brain to recognize the bed only for sleep, so that's all it will want to do there. I went from not being able to sleep at all to eight hours a night in about two weeks.

You would receive a better answer if you included details such as your age, whether or not you visited a doctor and his recommendations (that should be your obvious first start), and whether or not you exercise regularly (Indicate how often) in your question.
If you do all of the above, eliminate caffeinated beverages, stop taking naps during the day, and purchase a really good bed. Like anything worthwhile it involves some discipline. If you have done all of the above indicate that in your question as well.
I've read two high quality books on getting a good night's sleep. Good luck!

Erma Bombeck once said the women after being pregnant, having babies, raising toddler, going thru school, and dating and staying up late to make sure they come home ok is why women don't sleep at night. They forgot how! Seriously, Blood pressure meds don't ususally cause sleepiness. It is more likely that the waking up at night is the culprit. You need to develope some sleep hygiene methods. Set a bedtime routine and stick with it. You might shower or take a long bath, quit drinking anything with caffiene in it after 3pm and avoid alcohol. You might find that some sort of meditation book for women is helpful Read the daily meditation at bedtime. Try to think only positive thoughts as you go to bed, I pray alot as I'm fallling asleep. This also helps me to reduce some of the conflicts that normally would keep me awake, Do not exersise before bedtime, your body needs time to relax. If you sleep with the TV on like I do, turn it off. If you need some noise buy yourself a clock radio or better yet one of those sound machines that plays things like the oceaan, the forest, the rain. That is white noise that relaxes you. Try to keep to the same schedule you do durig the week. Itscrews you up to sleep until noon on saturday. I usually get up at 6 for work and on my days off I try to get to bed about the same time and get up about 8 when I normally wake up without the alarm. If none of this works, you may need to see your Dr. and get a sleeping pill for short term use or for those nights you can't fall asleep. Good luck.

It could be lots of things from stress from the day, sleep apnea which should be checked out by a doctor. Drink some warm milk before going to bed, watch some thing funny on tv or read a light hearted book. Do some thing like this before you sleep to help you sleep.

a lot of different reasons. depression or other mental issues could be the cause. or a recent change in medication. or, it could just be the matress that you sleep on. if it's old, you might consider getting a new one.
