How much is the gasoline tax in your state? What do you think it should it be?

The National tax rate is 18.4 cents per gallon. If Congress really wanted to help alleviate the price of gas for American consumers, especially lower income Americans, wouldn't it help if they suspended the tax? What about your state? How much do they charge? Check out the link. You might be shocked. Blame Big Oil all you want, but don't let a bunch of elitist politicians off the hook.

The budget next year is for 2.9 trillion dollars and they still can't balance the budget.

In my state (MN) it's $0.20 per gallon. It was suppose to be use for transportation, but, as usual, a lot of it has been taken over the years for other areas. Last November we voted on a constitutional amendment that would put all the money generated from the gas tax into transportation. It passed.

A few months ago, our legislators decided they wanted more and proposed increasing the gas tax by another $0.10 per gallon. Our governor shot that down, and they didn't have enough votes to override it. Now they are trying to get an increase of a nickel per gallon (which our governor again said he will veto), but they are much closer to getting enough votes to override.

Personally, I do not agree with any new taxes until they can clean up the spending and prove it to the taxpayers. We (MN) currently have a $2 billion budget surplus, and our legislators keep coming up with new taxes to impose. First the gas tax increase, then a new tax bracket for income that would make MN the highest taxed state on income, and now they are also looking at an increase in the sales tax.

no, i don't have a problem with the tax aspect of it. countries in europe pay much higher taxes on gasoline but are rewarded by investments in social programs, universal health care, etc. taxes are bad just because they are taxes; it depends on what the gov't is using those taxes for, so the first step should be finding out where those taxes are going.

i do have a problem with the high price of gas itself and with the fact that the oil/gas industry is making higher profits than other industry. the ceo of exxon made a salary in the hundreds of millions last year; that, to me, is criminal.

the taxes are not the problem; the price gouging on the part of the oil industry is.
