My door is locked; I've taken apart the knob and everything, but the inside mechanism is stuck...?
Apparently, there's the long black tubing that covers the metal, which essentially retracts from the door in order to unlock it. It's stuck--it won't budge, so how do I remove the entire thing from the door, seeing as the lock itself won't retract to unlock itself, and the nails are bolted in?

Without knowing the specific make and model # of your lock, and your lack of correct terminology, make it pretty tough to give you a good answer. If you are refering to the latch [ the part that is either mortised or driven into the door edge, and does the actual latching into the strike & jamb ], you should try to use a large flat screwdriver, or whatever fits and works, through the hole where the knob assembly shaft went, and try to imitate the turning motion of the door knob shaft assembly. To tell you much more, would violate my oath, which I won't do. I hope this helps.

If the door has been painted since it has been installed, you might just be stuck because it was painted over. Try taking a flat head screwdriver and prying on it a little. Dont pry so hard that you mess something up though.

Call a locksmith and hurry. After 11:00 PM, most of them charge a triple rate. Learn from my experience. Don't try to repair something you don't know how to repair at night - you might end up having to leave the door unprotected all night.

It depends on the type of door handle you have. Most are fairly simple to replace.
Buy a new handle that appears to be the same from a hardware store and use their instructions. Sounds like you need to replace it anyway.

if you are on the side the hinges are, take the pins out and pull the door off. (if the lock was installed correctly the dismantling screws should be on the same side as the hinge pins)
