Do Amish people need some equivalent of car insurance for their horse and carriage?

I've always wondered about this - if a car got into an accident with a horse and carriage, and the horse and carriage owner was at fault, I'd imagine they'd need car insurance or some equivilant to protect them against the costs of the accident.

Update:

Even if the Amish don't believe in insurance, I would think that a government may require it, as they do for cars, if it's being used on roadways.

Over the years as a claims adjuster I have many claims involving cars and Amish buggies (mostly in WI). They don not carry insurance and are not required to do so. The only requirement they have is to put the orange triangle on the back of the buggy.

Even though they do not carry insurance I have found them to be willing to pay for claims that they are at-fault for. They are a genuine honest group of people.

Ok, that is just not fair. If you hurt the horse you would be jailed. It trashes your car and it's your fault? I love animals but if people are gonna keep them on the road they should be prepared for the damage they can cause. You have my sympathy. As for what to do about it, I would recommend that you take it up with anyone you can. If you got the number of the owner of the horse and cart call him if nothing else works and see if you can make a deal without having to take it to court as that would be expensive for both of you. Also I fell sorry for you as you just lost an awesome car and your luck must be crap to meet a horse and cart on the road and to have it do that. Just a quick note though, from the expense of the car you bought, it would be presumed by most people that money isn't really an issue for you but as I don't know that I can't say, just keep that in mind if you go to court that sympathy may not be with you. I really hope this helps!

    Here's a great image:

The Amish TEND to avoid insurance, but not all. It's an individual choice.

I do not believe in mandatory insurance. It originated out of an old protection con. Rather than the Amish having to pay insurance, I believe NO ONE should. It should be available, but not mandatory. Also, it is a known con to require that each vehicle be insured rather than the driver.

The Amish do not believe in insurance - they are likely to forgive and offer some sort of restitution.
