Autopsies?

I'm not sure about a formal autopsy plan. At an autopsy the medical examiner does an external exam first, looking for any visible injuries or abnormalities. They then open the body and remove and weigh the organs, and examine the organs for any sign of disease or trauma. I'm not sure if this happens in every autopsy, but they also remove the skull cap and examine the brain for any sign of damage. They take blood, urine, and eye fluid samples to send to toxicology, which normally takes 3-6 weeks to get results back.

For cardiac arrest the main organ to look at is going to be the heart. It's normally pretty obvious if someone had a heart attack or even multiple heart attacks because scar tissue builds up on the heart. But, like I said they'll examine everything so if there is a different cause of death than cardiac arrest they'll be able to tell you. This may sound stupid but there's a really good medical examiner show on Discovery Health called Dr. G Medical Examiner. It's normally on Friday nights and occassionally weekend nights. It gives some pretty good insight into the whole autopsy process.

An autopsy checks all organs. Most heart attacks are caused by a blockage in one of the coronary arteries. Autopsies also include toxicology and various other blood tests. Be prepared, the formal final results can take months to come back.
