Nothing screams "global warming!" more than the endangerment of the polar bear. What can I do to stop this?

I have read many articles lately about the cause/effect relationship that exists between the event of global warming and the falling numbers of polar bear. The polar bear feed on the seals that they can capture from their perches above the water on polar ice. Without the ice, they have no way to capture the seals. Please see the report posted today on Yahoo! News. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070521/sc_nm/climate_...

I am not a scientist, and I am not talking about sending massive amounts of money to research projects. Please, though, tell me one thing that I can do, perhaps one change in my daily life, that will help to stop (or even reverse) the greenhouse effect caused by global warming.

Thank you. I will commit to a change if someone can offer one that is reasonable and effective.

Update:

I have no affection for Al Gore, and I am not an alarmist. However, word from a friend of mine who just came back from polar bear country is that the bears are even resorting to cannibalism because of the lack of feeding opportunity. I have begun to consider that global warming may indeed be a reality and would like to do my fair share to slow the trend. Once it is broke, it can't be fixed.

Update 2:

Austin, Thank you. I [basically] do all of those things. Continue, though. Those are the sorts of things I am talking about.

Update 3:

Hi there, oletoad! You are onto something there. I've chosen riding over motorcycles already.

For the average American, like you and me, the easiest and most effective thing you could do is to make a small easily commitable change in your life. The most obvious would be not to eat anymore polar bear. ; )

A very effective way of reducing energy use is to learn more about "vampire" watts or "phantom" load. These phenomena occur in every home that uses any type of electronics or appliances. Basically, any electric device uses small amounts of electricity even when it is turned off. The solution is to completely cut off these appliances from the source of electricity.

The solutions to this problem range from expensive / low hassle to inexpensive / high hassle. The expensive solution is to rewire every outlet in your home to a series of "master" switches These master switches are ordinary light switches that cut the circuit to every outlet in a given room. When you leave the room, hit the switch and goodbye phantom load. The cheapest solution is to unplug every appliance until you are ready to use it again.

The most practical solution is to plug your appliances into a power strip with an on/off switch. When you leave the room turn off the switch and the phantom load disappears. Even though this is practical, it does require a little bit of effort. Also, a power strip fastened to your wall or sitting next to your toaster can be somewhat unattractive.

I recently visited a zero-energy open house and the owner used the power strip option to reduce his phantom loads. He calculated his saved wattage by using a small meter to determine how much electricity each appliance was using while turned off but still plugged in. His calculations determined a savings of around $76 in electricity per year. Not much, but its a small, inexpensive, simple solution to reducing your use of fossil fuel generated electricity.

Look at the link I included to learn more about phantom loads.

I've actually read that the polar bear numbers have been increasing. I don't believe in all the global warming nonsense, but even if it were real, it has been much hotter in the past and the polar bears obviously lived through that. I wouldn't worry that you are killing polar bears. Don't let the fanatics make you think that you are a killer. I do think we should be wise stewards and conserve, but to be fanatical and try to run others lives is horrible, especially from politicians like Al Gore who wastes energy on his MASSIVE mansion and Nanci Pelosi who wastes fuel by going to San Francisco on her huge jet instead of using a phone to talk to people.

You don't need to do anything at all. Man is not causing or influencing global warming, and of the 13 species of polar bear, 11 are stable or rising in number. IT might be 10 soon due to Russia's legalization of polar bear hunting, so u can blame them.

truthfully, polar undergo populations are thriving, and characteristic been for extremely some time. Al Gore needs you to think of they might't swim and clearly states it-while besides the undeniable fact that they might swim. in actuality they might swim for thousands of miles. You under no circumstances pay attention approximately that do you. The polar bears are nice, that is all a rip-off to get babies worried approximately it and are available living house to tell their mum and dad approximately how they could end international warming-for the cuddly polar bears! don't be fooled sweetie

Polar bears are doing fine. Thier numbers are up. They survived the holocene warm period which is much warmer than today and there is no reason to suspect they won't find a way to survive in the future. You shouldn't give those scientists so much credit. They pretend they can predict the future when in fact they don't even know the past (apparently).

Even if polar bears are truly facing possible extinction, what's to say it just isn't meant to happen? Species die and species are discovered constantly. Throughout the many cycles of global warming that have happened already I'm sure TRILLIONS of animals have died. If you think SUV's are the culprit, imagine how insignificant ours must be compared to the ones the wooly mammoths must have driven to cause the end of their ice age. I'd say there is very little we can do for the polar bears.

By saving the Polar Bears, you are screwing the Emperor Penguins. These cute little birds have to walk over 180 miles over cold ice caps from their oceans to their nesting grounds. As the ice caps melt we will shorten their walks and they wont get so tired on their journey home. Anyone who has seen that Penguin movie knows how cute these critters are. Help the penguins, screw the bears.

Buy CFLs (Google it) to cut down on energy by 70% than energy already used by your lightbulbs. They are a bit pricy, but the investment is good.

Walk, bike, or carpool to where ever you want to go.

Simple things like this can help stop global warming, or at least reduce it.

Note that you're not only saving polar bears, but your saving every living organism on Earth.

    admirable sentiments

here are some pointers perhaps you see something that strikes your fancy.

the best we can do as individuals is be more responsible ,in our own neck of the woods

organise well publicized clean up parties ,talk on the radio

    have citizan meetings

get the shools involved to plant trees and listen to environmental awareness talks,

if you do any cleaning up leave signs behind saying who cleaned, why and ask people not to start dumping rubbish again ,leave a hole or bins ,in case people come with trash ,

we have done a lot of comunity cleaning and if you dont leave alternatives or try to work on peoples guilt feelings (some people actually have those ,but not many)

than your efforts are a waste of time.

that is what we do in Mexico

    POSITIVE ACTIONS

print Tshirts with slogans ,hang posters all over the place (with recycled paper if possible)

classify trash take out all the organic waste and make compost with it ,the worst you can do is throw it with the trash

70% of contamination is due to organic waste that is mixed in with the garbage .

and it is just as bad in the sewer where it helps to breed rats and in the landfill it poisons the ground

and it is the easiest to take care of

o first of all we have to clasify trash at least keep the organic to one side ,like in a plasic bin with a lid

if you got a few meters of ground ,you only need 1 or 2 square meters in a shallow hole ,in the shade ,that you can wet now and again ,where you dump everything that is organic ,from toilet paper, bones vegetable cuttings ,eggshells,,dead bodies ,excrement ,and cover regularly with leaves to keep humid and to hide any smell

the worms will come and decompose the wastes truning it into beautifull blck soil for the garden of flower pots .

if you are in a apartment ,if you have a balcony get a big plastic bin drill some holes in the side and lid ,

and add a few buckets of sand now and again to put over the trash ,you should realt stir or move the stuff at times to airate it and ensure that the decomposition is overall ,keep moist

this rubbish does not get big very fast and the thing works for a long time with out getting full

got a compost heap in the garden for 6 years ,have added tons of banana poles ,and palm leaves at times tree trunks ,the mountain goes up and down and never seems to get any bigger ,the stuff rots and becomes a very fine black compost of high density

    ------------------------------...

global warming cannot be stopped but we can stop helping it becoming faster, and being friendlier to out Environment cannot be bad

if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to slowdown the destructive processes

reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.

the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.

the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia

Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

    the protection of existing forrests.

stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

    education on environmental awareness

education on family planning to curb over´population

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.

more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks

,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour

alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine

    recicling wastes,limit water use

here are a 100 more ways

Never leave electrical equipment on standby, they use practicaly the same power as on. Don't drive massive cars. Buy local food rather than stuff that's come form the other side if the world
