What are some things I should look out for when looking for adult swimming lessons?
Like questions to ask, things to note or any tips...
I'm 19 and I can't swim yet and I'm determined to learn..but there are too many 'what ifs' in my head.
Help appreciated, Thanks!

First, adult swimming lessons should be taught by an experienced instructor (5 years or so). Make sure your instructor possesses the maturity level to teach adults, some instructors are not comfortable doing this and they simply do it because they are told to or for the money.
Second, aim for a small class in which the instructor can give you plenty of attention. most classes cap at 6 or 8 swimmers. That size group is fine for adults.
Third, make sure your intsructor understands your goals and is perceptive to your needs. If he or she seems distratced or seems to be "going through the motions" you should fine a new class.
Fourth, your instructor should be supportive, encouraging and knowledgeable. She shoudl be able to adapt exercises for everyone in your group. Adult classes often are made up of varying levels of abilities. Your instructor should be able to teach all levels of swimming and should be able to answer your questions readily. This also compounds on the experience level of the instructor.
Ask around at your local club or YMCA and see what other adult members and classes have to say. Try and observe the class in action before you sign up. Talk to the instructors, see how receptive they are to your interactions. You will soon find a class you are comfortable with and based on your determination you'll really enjoy yourself and the experience!
Congratulations on deciding to take the plunge, I hope you enjoy your lessons and good luck!

Your Instructor should have:
Experience
Maturity
Knowledge
Training
Patience
Your Instructor should:
Listen to you
Demonstrate, and be in the water with you if you are a beginner.
Explain your goals. How will the instructor help you to achieve them?
Ask if you can talk to the Instructor before class starts and explain your "What Ifs".
If your "What Ifs" are safety related, you will want to know exactly what steps your teacher will take to guarentee your safety.
If you are fearful, don't be timid about saying so. Did you have a traumatic experience that may impact your leaning?
If your "What ifs" are about physics, like floating and sinking, and propulsion, your instructor should be able to explain hydrodynamics(the way your body works and doesn't work in water) in a way you can understand.
The way they answer your "What Ifs" will either make you feel confident with them, or feel free to try another instructor.
A WSI usually has the above qualificaitons, so do others. Ask! You are paying, get what you deserve!
A group lesson should have students in the same ability level, or you might want to consider private lessons at first.
Congratulations on you new goal!
