Why is Wal-Mart's tax higher in some parts in California?

San Diego, the sales tax is 7.75%

Why is it that when I go to Wal-Mart the tax is 8.75% ??

Target is the right 7.75% tax

and as well as everywhere else.

If the actual store is in National City, the tax rate is 8.75%. For a complete listing, see attached schedule.

There are two possibilities. If the Target and Wal-Mart differ in County/City location, the city and county tax rates may vary for a business "just over the line". Also, as here in NC, tax rates vary from county to county, such as our county's 1/2 cent sales tax for school construction.

The other concern may be WHAT YOU BOUGHT. Some locales have special additional sales tax rates based on the purchase. For example, my county has a restaurant tax. Did you make a purchase at the restaurant or food court? The adjacent county to mine has a "fast-food" tax. And, we have a special "Hotel/Motel tax" along the I-95 corridor. Believe it or not, neighboring Wake County (Raleigh) even has a "Take-Out tax"!!! That's right! If you go through the DRIVE THRU rather than going inside, your Big Mac will cost a few cents more.

Isn't it about time for us to re-enact the Boston Tea Party?

Perhaps it straddles the actual city line. It may be considered county even though it seems like it wouldn't be. Wal-Marts are notorious for doing that, but usually it is so they can get a tax break not an increase...

Check with your state tax agency or municipal tax agency. If they are charging the wrong tax they should be reported.
