Why do LCD TV's use so much power.?
Most people believe that LCD TV's use less power than CRT TV's, but this is not true. If you check the power requirements for the same screen size, the CRT TV's use slightly less power than the LCD TV's. The manufacturer's claim that the LCD's use less power. Since they use a flourescent tube for a light source, it would seem that they would be more efficient. What gives?

The backlight. Since the LCD technology requires a backlight for the screen to show a picture well, you are forced to have this light always on. Since it is always on, it eats quite the amount of power. LCD TVs will product a picture wihtout a backlight, it is just almost impossible to see.

I have a friend who is a regional manager for IBM, and is also a fanatic on saving energy. This is what he said about this.
' A 60" CRT, if one was available, would use more energy than a 60" LCD or Plasma.
An LCD panel is lit by a bright flourescent tube in the background, and its power consumption is constant( therefore energy efficient)
A Plasma lights up individual pixels. If all the pixels are lit up, then the energy usage would be higher than LCD.
Therefore, his conclusion was , that the LCD would generally use less energy than the other formats.

The same was asked when hd tv came out but its becaus better visuals somtimes need more power like a ps3 needs more power than a nes its because tech. is moving forward.
