It's like Pavlov's dogs, we're tricked into thinking we're getting something and motivated to keep answering. It appeals to people who are competition freaks and like to boast "I am a top contributor."

Phooey, it's all pointless. It's not like we win a car when we get 50,000 points! Last December, Yahoo Answers gave away some lame prizes to celebrate their 1st anniversary. It was stuff like coffee mugs with the Yahoo logo on them. Heck, I get a free coffee mug when I donate blood and the design is nicer!

Points just give you bragging rights and a chance to get on the "Leader Board" if that appeals to you. I wish they'd give us free music downloads when we reach a higher level but I didn't get a darned thing for reaching level 7 and don't anticipate getting anything of value, just the "glory" of being a "top contributor." Big deal.

to encourage users to answer more and more completely, thus making the whole system better. a system that is based on user-created content is only as good as the content that is in it.

oh, and the more time we spend on Yahoo!, the more ads we see and the more money Yahoo! can charge their advertisers so it's a win-win for everyone :-)
