B-17 crew members, what was their avarage height and weight .?
I recently had a chance to board a B-17, my all time favorite bomber, I did everything from sit in the pilots seat to climb into the ball turret and I have to admit that at 6'2" and 230lbs I had the hardest time moving about. what was the avarage size of the airmen who manned these aircraft?

Most of the guys of that generation were an average of about 5-9. My Dad was a B-17 pilot at the end of the war and he was 6-2 and said he was very cramped. The "lucky" one was the ball turret gunner on the underside of the aircraft. He was generally the smallest guy on the crew; he had to be as it was very close quarters inside that thing. Most of those guys were under 5-4.

I did the same thing in a B17 and was amazed at how small and cramped everything was. Flying was drafty and noisy. Moving around was a pain.
