How to get rid of tarantulas in my TX yard?

We have lived in this home for 4 years (but in Texas longer without this problem). Every year our tarantula population grows. Several got into the house last year. No one hurt yet, but very scared of them. Some have walked all the way to the front door and then just died there. We think they died waiting to get in. It's not even hitting the 90's yet, so I doubt they want to use my a.c. We have had more than usual rain, but this is not the cause. 2 years ago one was dead in garage right next to door leading into my home. The ones we've found this year are babies.

I want to pour gas down the holes and then put a big rock on top. My husband refuses to do anything. But I seem to be the only one with the nerve to catch them in a pickle jar. Help, I'm running out pickle jars!!!!! I really just want them to all go away.

Update:

I do appreciate your idea of selling them, but I didn't mention that my pickle jars have been given to many people! We have kept one in our indoor zoo(fish, dogs, birds, turtles). A church very near us HAD trailers on platforms used as classrooms and they had hundreds of them. Then they removed the trailers. I think we have the ancestors. I have small dogs(Yorkies) and am afraid for them, they roll all over dead ones in the yard and the first time I thought the rolling killed the spider and took the dog to the vet to look under all that yorkie hair. The vet pointed out that my tarantula was a bit 'dry' and was dead first. Then he charged me $45. The tarantula that was in my girl's bathroom last year acted very tense and aggressive . I put him in a jar and our neighbors family loved him for quite a while. : )

sometimes cats will help keep them away.

aerosol hairspray would also work! :)

and lastly you may want to have a company come and treat the lawn and another come and treat the house on the same day. a double whammy might be just what is necessary to get rid of them.

whatever happens, i hope it takes care of this - shall we say - hairy problem.

You should not destroy these creatures. They actually do you and your family a lot of good keeping down the pest population in you area. As an option to outright destroying them if that is your goal you might try offering some up for sale if you can possibly ID the species. If you cant you still might be able to sell them for a reduced amount and let the buyer figure the other out. The ones you see wandering the most are probably males seeking to mate and they are looking for the burrows of the females.

If it is the "danger aspect of the spiders that worries you, you can and should stop worrying. Tarantulas are essentily harmless to humans. The ones you have walking around do not have a potent venom and probly wont bite even if you picked them up with bare hands. Heck you could ship a bunch to me and I would be glad to make sure they find good and safe homes.

You should also keep in mind that pouring anything like a petrolium product down a hole in the outside is a very serious violation of the EPA act. The fines for this should you get caught could cripple you.

Should you choose to ship these critters to any interested party please for the sake of the spider refer to the following information:

Heck you might even try to house and keep a couple of these yourself, you might discover just how interesting they can be.

Source(s): Keep over 20 tarantulas of my own.
