Depends upon what kind of paint. Call a local paint supply store or a painter and ask. I consider my self a professional painter and my method is not for everyone, but avoids the problem you have. Except for roller and spray, I don't use a drop cloth. The drop cloth is good for roller splatter and over spray, but only do a section at a time and move the drop cloth out of the way to the next section, then carefully clean any fresh boo boos BEFORE they set in. Same for brush work, except I don't use a drop cloth because if I make a boo boo I immediately clean it up before I continue. After years of painting I don't make boo boos. The worst one years ago was dumping a near full gallon down a stairway, that was a very big BOO BOO. Took the whole day to clean it up and I was using drop cloths but they did not help, in fact contributed to the can dumping over. If you make a boo boo clean it up immediately, and don't make boo boos. Worst problem with drop cloths is a false sense of security, paint drips are easily tracked all over the place and dry before you see them. So watch for them and clean them ASAP.

Whatever you do.. DO NOT USE BLEACH! I had the same problem, and it turned my carpet all weird. Since its already dried up, the easiest thing to do is call a carpet cleaning company and get them to spot treat it, Shouldn't cost too much, usually $5-15.00 depending on size of area. Also, some carpet companies can just sale you a bottle of cleaner that will do the same trick!

Use a good shampoo, yes shampoo will get a lot of paints out of carpet. The fibers in carpet are similar to hairs on your head so a good shampoo treatment with warm water and a lot of bending over will get it out.

You might want to try mineral spirit to see it that works. Try in a closet or something first to make sure carpet color doesn't run. Next time try some dish washing detergent before it dries that trick seems to work ok.
