Dyson Vacuum?

Ok so there is a lot of hype on these. What do you think of yours? Have you had problems with it? Worth the money or not? I am particularly interested in the animal models.

I bought a Dyson DC15 Animal in March. Upon opening the shipping box I was terribly disappointed in the quality of the plastic used. Very soft and flimsy material everywhere. I contemplated at that point bringing it back to the store, but decided to give it a try.

The noise is somewhat unsettling. My kids and wife did not like the high pitched sounds it made. Motor and exhaust sound levels are quite high.

Despite the claims of easy stair cleaning, I found it quite clumsy. The mini turbine head is air powered, not electric, and has very little power for real cleaning. Its speed dropped considerably when applied to the carpet. It looks and sounds great while held up to watch, but its functionality is poor. The flexible plastic hose is flimsy and appears very low quality.

I started vacuuming a small area of floor about 4 feet square. The canister filled quite quickly and needed to be emptied. It needed emptying a few more times after cleaning the entire upper floor. Next cleaning was the same, as well as the time after that. Clearly my carpet isn't that dirty! The canister was filling not with dirt, but with carpet fiber.

I was literally vacuuming up my carpet. The DC15 was returned to the store for refund. After the hype and optimism I was terribly disappointed.

I'm back to looking for a replacement for my 35 year old Electrolux.

Ok, I sell these things (Appliances @ a major retailer with a yellow tag :-P ). If you want a vacuum that will last you for years without costing you anything (exception being a belt) then go for it. Most of the time you get what you pay for in a vacuum. Lets say you buy a $150 vacuum every other year, thats going to be $450 by the time the warranty will run out on a Dyson. An Animal model vac costs from $400-$550. So, add the cost of filters $40-$80 a year for non-Dysons, and you've just spent at least $200 more by the 5 year mark. Dyson 5yr cost $400-$550, others $650+!!! Most of the coments here are positive, especially by pet owners if you can afford it you'll be happy. Most of my customers have loved them!

The Dyson vacuum ROCKS! I am so thrilled with mine that I specifically went looking in Yahoo! Answers to see if anyone had asked about them. I wanted to share my experience. The Dyson is an engineering marvel, and should be named the 8th Wonder of the World. I needed to replace my dying Hoover bagless vacuum, and I'd been eyeing the Dyson for awhile. Because it's so expensive, I've held off on buying it. Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and get one. I bought the one designed for pet owners - the lovely purple model. Here are my observations. 1) On hardwood or other hard surface floors, you only have to get "close" to the particulate matter. The suction is so powerful that the vacuum pulls nearby dirt in. No more sweeping the same spot over and over again. 2) There are rubberized corners at the front of the vacuum that serve to push dirt in front of the vacuum so that it can be picked up, rather than spread it out further, out of the cleaner's path. 3) The acid test: I use the vacuum attachments on my microfiber / ultrasuede upholstered furniture. This fabric is sueded, so it attracts cat hair like a magnet. But, the Dyson removes cat hair like a charm! 4) The vacuum's weight is balanced differently than any other upright I've used. It's a heavy machine, but the load is carried in a compact and balanced space, so it moves around almost like a self-propelled lawn mower. The vacuum head is also compact, so as to reduce the amount of effort it takes to push it around. The machine doesn't seem nearly as heavy as it really is. It also has a convenient handle topping the heavy part of the cleaner, which makes transporting it a breeze. 5) The power cord is extra-long, so I can vacuum my entire downstairs without moving it. 6) The extension wand fits down inside the retractable hose, which is a bit odd to get used to, but it makes for easy switches between using the carpet vacuum and the ancillary attachments. The hose is constructed of a very durable, yet flexible material. In fact, if you're not careful, if you completely occlude the vacuum opening, the hose collapses because the suction is so strong. Yet, the hose is so hardy ... no harm is done. 7) The house I just bought has off-white carpet throughout. The carpet looks brand-new, even though the house is 8 years old. When I was considering the house for purchase, I noticed a Dyson vacuum in the closet, belonging to the previous homeowners. That's what finalized my decision to get one. You sound a lot like me. I'm very cynical about television commercials, and I rarely give out product endorsements. But, I was so pleased with this vacuum that I want to tell the WORLD! You can believe the commercials. James Dyson, the inventor, really did perfect the art of vacuuming. I think I read that he's fought several patent infringements, to protect his years of research efforts. This product is revolutionary, and I will never own another brand of vacuum cleaner! I've used my mom's Kirby and the Dyson whips it's heavy, clunky metal butt! If you're in the market for a vacuum cleaner, this is the one to buy.

I think the Dyson is a great vacuum cleaner. After using it you can see the all the dirt and crud you have missed with your other vacuum in the clear bin. It is a very nice machine and the animal comes with alot of accessories for a nice price. The Dyson DC17 is the most aggressive Dyson Animal around and it looks sharp as well. You can pick one at 1stchoicevacandsew.com for only $489 ($60 below everyone else). I still think the Miele S5 Series Vacuum Cleaner is the nicest vacuum cleaner ever. I have the Miele Callisto S5280 from Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew on a phone special which I think they still have going on for only $699. The filtration is incredbile it is 99.995% effective at .3 microns (really small) and is approved for people with allergies and asthma. It uses a HEPA filter with charcoal on the bottom to take out the odors and the bags are called intensive clean bags and are cloth like! As for fexibility, the powerhead (which works great on my carpets!) has a double swivel neck to get under and around everything. The floorbrush is incredible as well. It twists and turns to get into corners, is low enough to get under furniture and baseboards and feels like you are pushing nothing. The machine itself is very lightweight and is a canister. It, like all other Miele products, is made to last 20 to 25 years unlike the Dyson (Dyson tells you plain out the vacuum will last 10 years). It has a 7 year motor warranty! I would definately get the Miele if you are up in that price range anyway. It is extremely flexible and is able to get around and under everything which you could never do with the Dyson. Also the Miele has more suction power and is extremely quiet I mean really quiet. The Dyson is the best Bagless Upright Vacuum Hands Down but the Miele S5 Canister Vacuums is the Best Vacuum Cleaner Ever Hands Down.

I think Dyson is way too expensive..... I get Consumer Reports which rated my vacuum Hoover Savvy the same as the Dyson.... I absolutely love my vacuum...It has furniture attachments.. Easy to empty cansiter. However, my vacuum is on the heavy side, it is about $40 to replace the filter, which I do about every other year and I've had it fixed acouple times, but I bought the warranty (3 extra yrs. for $60) and the repair place is 10 min from my house.. The vacuum is under $200... Before I got the Hoover I was buying a new vacuum about every year.and I didn't even have a carpeted house....

I don't have one yet but I borrowed my sister in law's Dyson DC 14 Animal Upright, and let me tell you it was the best vacuum cleaner ever!!! My husband and I couldn't believe all the crap is sucked out of our carpets. People might say this vacuum cleaner is overrated but once you see the results first hand it will not disappoint like those other cheap ones on the market. You get what you pay for. Now my husband is sold and we are planning in buying one for my birthday.

Love the Dyson! We have 5 cats and a dog, so we know a good vacuum when we see one. For the person who answered Sears Kenmore, we have had horrible luck with ours. It has been in the shop 3 times so far and still doesn't work. I'm glad they have had better luck with theirs. We got our Dyson at Costco so we got a decent deal (for a Dyson). Good luck!

I can honestly say the Dyson is a good hoover. Easy to change filter, run under the water leave to dry for 12 hrs, easy to pop back in. Great for animal hairs, people with allergies, great for carpets , hard floors. upholstery. No problems at all. Very happy with my Dyson

i don't have one, but i know they are wonderful. i have my house cleaned every other week and they use a dyson and it gets my floors looking wonderful. but to be honest, i think the reason i have not gotten one yet is because of the cost of them. i have a hard time spending that much money on a vacuum cleaner

I really prefer a cannister model because they are easier to move around and I think the attachments are also easier to use (don't get crimps in the hose.)

However, I love my Dyson. It is one of the best engineered products I have ever seen.
