A TV programme highlighted how we remember those who died in conflict but forget & ignore the injured.?
The TV programme was "Power to the People" (aired on Wednesday at 2:15am). It mentioned that the USA has 87 military hospitals whilst we are in the process of closing the only one we have. I realise the US military is six times the size of ours but on that basis we should have 14 - 15 such hospitals. Any thoughts on this matter?

i totslly agree the american military has great services for their servicemen so why the hell have we not got it in the UK the NHS is underfunded and over strecthed and there are a great deal of servicemen that are forgotten that is why 70% of the homeless are former service members!!! I was going out with a guy in the US army and i was shocked as to how good there services are and this was in Germany!! I work with ex military who has mental health however we are just a small network and due to funding we are unable to accept everyone so a lot go through the system not getting the support they need or deserve. There is so much difference in the UK and US military!! I mean you should see the on post housing for the US military its amazing yes it is old etc but you go to the army housing for the UK it is disgusting!! Yes the US army is 6 times the size of ours but it is not every military prinicples are based on the englidh military ranks etc so why are we so sloopy with the services we should of set a standard from the beginning for other military to follow instead we are cutting the resources!!! I mean the spouses of US military are well cared for in terms of being able to shop in the commasiary etc benefits etc. Wives of the UK military get hardly any benefits i am just using this as an example to for people to say why should they get benefits etc!! The goverment need to stop ploughing our money into usless things such as the millineum dome all them moons ago now that was a waste of billions of pounds that could of gone to the armed forces etc. Why are men complaining that the aircrafts they have are out dated and dangerous!! why are the american calling the engilsh servicemen the flintstones and the borrowers for asking to use their equpiment!! this statement is just what i think i may not be an expert but i believe that the goverment need to fix up and open their eyes that men and woman are still wanting to join the english military but they will soon be walking out because what do they get in return for their scarfise NOTHING!!!! if someone said you have to join any military in the world because you have to i would join the US army how sad is that that i feel more prone to do that when my whole life i have lived in england my hertiage is here but why join something that is you will get nothing in return for but a diganosis for PTSD no help end up on the streets with a can of stella in your hand!! i am just a small fish in a big ocean trying to help people who gave it their all so that i could lead the life i lead then if i am helping just 1 person then i will feel like my job is being done!! if i could help the whole lot with PTSD then i will feel on top of the world!!

Bruce this is UK, your treatment of veterens and injured servicemen is a million times better than ours could dream of; not only do we not have a single veterans hospital we only have one ward dedicated to servicemen in the entire country.
I watched that program too and found it very moving and shocking, I think of course we should have military hospitals. The treatment returning servicemen need is often very specialized, theres so many reported cases of PTSD that have been missed by non-qualified (in this issue) doctors on the NHS. At this time are wankers of politicians are asking more from our soldiers than almost any other time in history - in terms of work required compared to numbers of men and equipment - and yet in return the abbandon them.
I think the one thing I've heard that truely makes me feel sick to the core, is that once you've become injured you're of lno use to the mod, dead or alive, and at least dead they don't have to pay your war pension. Now this was just someones opinion but I think it rings very true. Suicides of Falklands veterans are higher than deaths down there, yet of people who have returned there have been no recorded suicides, so does the mod fund such treatment? Of course not, it does nothing for them, doesn't even give our ex-servicemen basic psycological treatment that is deemed fit for all our upercrust and celebrities who find themselve 'depressed'.
And its not all mental illness, injured servicemen don't even get equipment such as prosthetic limbs that they require. And in normal NHS hospitals servicemen are told to remove uniform to not offend people, these are people who have got serious injuries due to risking there lives, they should eb somewhere where they are safe and can just concentrate on getting better.

It is nothing new to forget the injured, ask any Vietnam vet who was injured during that conflict..there were continuing horror stories about Vietnam vets who were wounded and kept in deplorable conditions while recovering as much a possible...it is also forgotten how the poorer classes of vets who arrived home with no physical injuries, were too forgotten and allowed to wallow in the misery of their mental confusion.
One story that emerged a few weeks ago is that the veteran's hospitals have been privatized and are now for profit enterprises...
While I have not been exposed to many from Iraq, I did meet one boy on leave in 2005 and while he was an amazing person he was suffering huge from mental stress...he was touring with us and while the bus was in motion his head was swiveling like an eagle watching for danger...he was unable to relax...and this was in the Scottish Highlands...this will prove historically to be a very serious problem the American government will have to deal with and the American public have a major obligation to make sure treatment is easily accessible for them...BUT, my bet is they will be residuals of another war allowed to wallow in the ghetto of misery.

From what I've seen of recent TV programmes I agree that our military wounded are not getting the 1st class treatment that they deserve. If we expect them to go into battle then we should provide the best facilities we can for when they are wounded.
It's 35 years since I was in the army and I smashed my elbow playing rugby while on exercises in Germany. I got excellent treatment in Germany and back in the UK. It looks as if things have gone greatly downhill since then.

Having sent our servicemen and women off to a horrendous conflict mainly on the say so of Bush and for his own personal glorification Blair has chosen to forget the injured. It is worse than a disgrace, it is criminal neglect by a man and his Cabinet who have never seen a shot fired in anger. It won't bother Blair, the $ signs are shining in his eyes as he hopefully disappears.

Actually it happened today. In the middle of the Night I woke up from a terrible dream, I dreamed that I was on the swings when I realize a spider made her web on stop of the swings. The spider was big and I knew it was very dangerous. I got a rock and destroyed the web but the spider jump and got me. The problem is that I have arachnophobia. :( very scary

as an ex soldier i can tell you that many of us suffer in silence no through our own bull headed ness but through government ignorance, we who once fought for our country and queen are expendable after our services are rendered null and void.
i have experienced depression on unimaginable scales since leaving after 12 years service, there is no soldier either serving or ex that doesnt carry some scars with them, but the simple fact of the matter is we were paid to do a job and now we have to fend for ourselves.
