Windows always shuts down on me.?
I just got a brand new gateway computer with windows vista on it. Every day, more than once, a warning flashes that windows is shutting down cuz it says it has encountered a problem. It says it will find the problem, but it never does. It happens when i am doing different things. And the warning isnt always the exact same thing, but in general. Here is an example: micromedia projector has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Can anyone tell me what it may be and how i may fix it? And if it is a computer problem, internet problem, etc.?
Maybe this will help. (yall have been so kind to respond. i know nothing about comps.) When my comp. came back , there was a box from microsoft windows that said: Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. It also said: Problem signature: Prob. event name Bluescreen. O>S> Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3. Locale ID: 1033. Then is had add. info., im writing only one of them. BC Code:50

Send it back to have it checked by Gateway. The real problem is most likely the operating system. Vista is new and has a lot of bugs that still need to be worked out. What version of vista are you using?

Most causes for system shutdown include the obvious bad power supply, CPU overheating, memory problem (usually just reboots constantly), you might want to test each DIMM of memory individually on the system, it's not likely all DIMMS are bad but by testing each you can narrow down which DIMM could be causing issue, verify your BIOS for CPU temp, should be from 40C to 60C, and verify alternate PSU as well, if problem persist use the partition with the recovery of OS & see if reinstall goes through all the way, it could also be OS related, does this shutdown only in Windows? how about the BIOS? How about while attempting to install OS ? verify all these things and use tech support as a last resort.

Do you have a video card installed? My hunch is it has something to do with a hardware malfunction or incompatible video card or defective motherboard. I had a similar problem before on a new PC I had the video card replaced with another model and worked ok since then. Try removing the video card and use the built in motherboard video. If it works, have the video card replaced with a different model. Unless there were errors during software installation, I don't think it is software related.

Best thing to do really, is to just send it back to the store, or the manufacturer from which you bought it at. As long as you have a service plan, it is easier for them to fix it or replace it, rather than for you to do it yourself.
I had a camera that was not turning on, and rather than buying a new battery or cord for it (which retail quite high) I took it back and the store policy allowed me to exchange it for the exact same product. Problem solved.
