How do I protect my knees while exercising?

I bought a dance workout DVD with different dance styles on it, including a ballet sculpt. That involved squatting and twisting to the side on one leg while still in a squat. I hurt my knees for a day in the process. What can I do as an alternate exercise to that move and still get the benefit from it?

If you don't do some sort of weight-bearing exercise, your bones will become fragile from osteoporosis and break more easily. so good job!;) but dont take it too fast to where you might have a meniscus tear or sprain. that would hurt. if the pain persists, see a doctor, or it could get worse if you wait. for alternate exercises, try squats and leg curls.....hope this helps and good luck to you!

Throw that video away! Your torso/body/knees should NEVER twist or wobble while in the squat position/movement.

When squatting, your knees should be stable, chest up, back flat and prevent your knees from travelling beyond the tips of your toes.

Your knees are made to move the body up and down not side to side. If you are able, do body squats or lunges if you wish to work your legs. I wouldn't recommend a knee brace, as they tend to become cruches and actually weaken the knee.

After you exercise make sure you stretch your knees out well by sitting in a chair and putting weights on the top or your ankle and straightening your leg then repeat

Try using a brace or wrapping it up in a ace bandage! Sounds like you are take it on full force, I would take it slow and easy. Remember little steps just like when we are born, it works as long as you stay with it. Good Luck Mike
