Help! My son peed down a heater vent and I don't know how to clean it to get rid of the urine smell!?
My son is potty-trained, but had an accident today, right over the heater vent. We have an old, small house and the heating system consists of one massive (3 feet by 2 feet) heating vent in the hallway. Usually in the summer months we cover it with a carpet, but it wasn't down today so when my son peed, it went straight down the vent. There's a huge heating system down there that we can't pull out to clean under, and the space around it is so small we can't reach our arms through. But our house REEKS of urine right now...actually, kind of like burnt urine, which is really bad. The pilot light is still lit because it's been pretty cold here recently, so the heater is always a little warm, even when not in use.
How can I get rid of this smell? My husband sprayed febreeze down there, but it hasn't helped. Any ideas????

Ya' know what? Here's a home remedy:
Open the doors & all the windows. Turn the furnace on high for an hour. Burn it off!

You can try using a solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray and wipe all the surfaces you can reach, and simply spray where you can't. Might be a good idea to extinguish pilot light first, then re light when done. You home might smell like vinegar for a few days, but it's WAY better than urine. If you are hesitant about the vinegar, try substituting lemon juice for the vinegar, but that won't be as effective on the smell. Good luck!

Have some business that cleans vents come in and clean and sanitize your vents. Only way I know and the house smells nice for awhile afterwards too.

Try a pet supply store for a urine remedy. It works on carpets and upholstery. Your son now knows what happens when you pee in the heating duct, he should not try this again.

My son did that when he was small and I cleaned it up with Mr. clean. You have to pull it apart and clean it all out. If you don't want to do it yourself I'd call a professional to clean it. Good luck. I feel your pain.

You can spray some more febreeze and put some baby powder to help absorb the moisture. Once it is dried, vacum the baby powder...I hope this help.
