Mildew Smell In Carpets?

I bought a house that sat vacant for a year. I want to live in it for six months until I build a new home. The carpeting is still in good shape and I really don't want to rip it out. Is there a chemical that can be added to a carpet cleaner that will get rid of the smell.

i worked in a store that got flooded during hurricane Katrina (6 inches of water on the carpet)

we used pine sol and "mopped" the carpet with it. it really helped with the moldy odor i did not notice the odor after we mopped it.

Don't mix carpet cleaner with anything, it will decrease the efficiency of the cleaner and may not be safe. Instead of using carpet cleaner, rinse with the hottest water possible and try spraying with Febreeze allergen reducer. It may help to use a urine spray for pet odors. My daughter peed the carpet one night after falling asleep on the floor and we could not get the smell out even after shampooing several times. I used a pet urine remover in my carpet cleaner and it worked great. Also carpets should not be cleaned with cleaner every time. You should go on an 18 month schedule of rinse, wait six months, rinse, wait six months and then clean. Extra cleaner not rinsed out of the carpet may leave the odor and definitely holds soil in the carpet fibers.

I agree with the one answer get a professional to clean the carpet. They have products that can get the mildew smell out of the carpet. If you decide to do it yourself I would go to a janitorial supply store, they have products they use in hospitals and schools that would do the job.

Make sure when cleaning carpets plenty of air stirring to get the carpet dry. If not the carpet will continue to smell like mildew.

the mould scent comes from some thing that replaced into there earlier the cleansing. The water used in the cleansing has activated it. maximum probable, the backing or padding has mould on it. it does not probable be the fault nor the accountability of the carpet purifier enterprise who could not have foreseen nor prevented the subject. additionally, the mould could have been there for incredibly some time because of the fact it does not "advance" in one day. Legally talking, they are actually not responsible for a hidden subject that may not possible to comprehend approximately and on suitable of that, it replaced into not the cleansing enterprise nor the technique that positioned the mould there. heavily, you're incredibly staring at ripping up all the carpet, treating for mould earlier changing with new carpet.
