Can coffee cause a headache? Or is it the creamer?

I have a friend who gets severe migraine when he drinks coffee regularly. It is not decaf and he uses a sweet liquid creamer - vanilla flavor I think. I've suggested it might be the creamer. Any ideas or experience? (He's a college student w/ heavy load.)

Update:

He says he can use energy drinks, tea & pain relivers w/ caffeine w/o this effect.

Well, if he can consume caffeine from other sources without getting migraines, then it's probably not the caffeine in the coffee that affects him. There are many other compounds in coffee that can have an effect on the body. It's possible that your friend is allergic/intolerant to some component in the coffee, and that this allergy is bringing on the migraines.

One other possibility I just thought of: Does the creamer that your friend uses contain aspartame or splenda? If it does, that could be the whole problem. Both sweeteners are known to cause toxic reactions in some people, and migraine headaches are among the possible side effects of both splenda and aspartame.

Actually caffeine can supress the blood vessels in the head to make it relieve headaches. Whenever I have a headache, I brew up a few cups of coffee, and bam 30min it's gone, amazing. Coffee and ibuprofen works well also. One time I have a monster energy when I had a huge headache, and I swear 10 min in it was gone whew that was damn nice. Maybe it's the sugar in the cremer. Maybe he;s allergic to the creamer or something. Well tell him to avoid dairy. This is a long shot, but maybe he is having a subtle reaction to the crap they put in dairy. You mention college student...could be poor diet. Again the sh!t in milk could be to blame also. People think they have colds when really theyre having a mucous attack due to the bodys response to that junk. Check out NotMilk.com. Tell him to tell you what he feels like 7-8 days after he has not had ANY dairy. Then if he wants, tell him to eat a pizza full of cheese and all that stuff, and ask him how he feels at day 9. You may be surprised.

The real culprit in NDC's (Non-Dairy Creamers) is the hydrogenated Palm oil content. This so-called "vegetable oil" is hydrogenated to whiten it and to make it more stable against extreme temperatures. But because they are hydrogenated (the process where a substance is bombarded with hydrogen molecules) it turns the oil into a a solid form. When mixed in the blood, this oil performs exactly the same and they solidify in the blood vessels and cause the arteries to form plaque. Eventually, this plaque formation will overcome the flow of blood and cause either atherosclerosis or a myocardial infarction. Is this considered as transfat? Yes they are because it you were to look at it molecular structure, it is composed of long chain triglycerides that are linked to one another. Because of this, it is a very stable compound and is not easily broken down. So is transfat good for the body? Definitely not. It is the no, cause of death in America. And people die of it without even knowing. Why? Because of an FDA loophole in the declaration of nutritional labeling where if a certain product in its package contains less than 0,5g of transfat, it can be declared in its label that it has ZERO TRANSFAT. Then if you gobble up too much of it, then it becomes hazardous to your health.

The caffine in the coffee can be the cause of his headaches. I suffer from severe migraines aswell. Drinking coffee can trigger a migraine and sometimes make one worse. My doctor prescribed me multiple medicines for my migraine headaches but I switched to an herbal pill. Feverfew. You can find it at a drug store like GNC or tell him to ask his doctor about it. It may not smell the prettiest...most herbal medicines do not, but it works wonders.

I used to suffer from really bad migraines..this can be triggered by loads of things ie..coffee, chocolate, cheese..stress..tiredness...not eating properly...and the list goes on. Tell him to try a process of elimination. Or write down what he had to eat when one comes on. Mine was definately coffee and have not drunk it for years and I love the smell..I do drink tea and thats fine!!
