Which era of Pink Floyd is your favorite? Beginning, middle, or end?

Beginning: Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Zabriskie Point, Atom Heart Mother.

Middle: Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut.

End: Momentary Lapse of Reason/Delicate Sounds of Thunder, Division Bell/Pulse, Waters Solo's(Pros&Cons, Radio KAOS, Amused to Death, Ca Ira), Gilmour solo(On an Island).

I'm sure the middle will win the vote, but my favorite era is the beginning, due to my love for Syd's songs, as well as the energy packed live performances after his departure(68-70). I absolutely love the 14+min versions of Fat Old Sun on a couple of my bootlegs. As a Floyd fan, I obviously love the albums in the 'middle' category(who doesn't!), but I think the early era is for me.

The beginning! I love Syd Barrett and his solo stuff too.

Atom Heart Mother is my favorite album. Kind of a spaghetti western slash Opus Chorale thing going.

    THe middle is excellent also.

The only thing I DON't like about floyd is Post Waters. True, a bit biased, but it just seems more Pop than what they stood for. Experimental frontier journeymen.

  • I am stuck between your definitions of the beginning and the middle. the late 1960's to the the early 1970's (pre dark side) is my favorite. Saucerful through Meddle are the albums that I listen to more often than the others.

Some of the music they played live in that era is fantastic. I watch the Live at Pompeii video more often then I should. I love it. However I enjoy it more in the old version that was on VHS instead of the updated one. It is nice that they have the old one on the dvd. The bootlegs from some of the live shows are awsome, they always add some new variation or wrinkle to the song, especially to the solos.

Give me Atom Heart Mother, Obscured by Clouds and Meddle any day of the week.

You're right, middle for me. The first album I heard by them was Dark Side of the Moon and I still love it. Also love Wish You Were Here and The Wall. All in that order. Have tried the early stuff, but to me it doesn't compare. Same with the later stuff.

Note: If you ever get a chance to go see The Australian Pink Floyd Show, do it! You won't be disappointed.

Late early and early middle, AKA the experimental period. Atom Heart Mother and Meddle are favorites, but I also like songs like Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Embryo, and a few of the Syd ones like See Emily Play, Arnold Layne, and Astronomy Domine. I do like some off of Dark Side of the Moon, but I have to say the experimental times are my favorite.

I think that's what causes tension between my dad and I when we load up CDs... I groan when he puts The Division Bell in, but he hates it when I put Atom Heart Mother in and force him to listen to the first four tracks... I don't particularly care for Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, which he is grateful for. But that long expanse of Roger-hating and 80's pop-rock is a little more than I can tolerate!

Oh, and could you send me a 14+ minute bootleg of Fat Old Sun? I love that song!

never liked the final cut, delicate sounds was ok but lacked the magic of floyd's best stuff (obviously without waters), but then division bell was absolutely awesome. the middle is of course the ''best'' i would say...too many memorable songs and albums, i think animals was absolute genius, gilmour's guitar was never better than on that album. the early stuff...i like the transition part, where gilmour just joins, a saucerful of secrets with all the oscillators and loops, and careful with that axe eugene, played so loud at a concert that it blew the p.a. and they couldnt continue the show. the barret stuff was good, i like arnold layne, bike, the scarecrow, interstellar, see emily play... but honestly they really got better after his departure.

i'd say from 68-71 (saucerful of secrets, meddle, atom heart mother) and then 73-79 (dark side, wywh, animals, the wall) was the best floyd.

The middle for sure, especially from"The Dark Side Of The Moon"onward, although one CD from the end period,"A Momentary Lapse Of Reason",I think is the best of that period,in fact I still listen to it today,"Learning To Fly" is one of the coolest songs ever!

Hands down it would have to be the "middle"era. Though I do like the song "bike" from the beginning era.But when you talk about songs like Time, Sheep, Have a Cigar, The Great Gig In The Sky, Young Lust, I would mention the obvious great middle era songs ,like Money, Us and Them, but like I said that's obvious..........

Source(s): Being a fan since the Dark Side of the Moon came out . And I was only 8 years old when it was released

hmmmm, I am stuck between the middle and end......... Division Bell and Sounds of Thunder are crazy awesome, but how do you discount the middle classics......The beginning stuff is good, but sounds too primitive with technology. I find it hard to listen to
