How can I help my puppy with Parvo?

I think my 8 week old golden retriever puppy has Parvo. She had diarrhea, she did not eat much this morning, and she is lethargic. We are taking her to the vet this morning. She got her first shots from the breeder when we picked her up.

Has anybody had a dog with Parvo? What can we do about it?

Unless she is vomiting with the diarrhea, she doesn't have parvo. It is probably scours or giardia. The vet can give her some antibiotics for it or a paracide.

She should be fine with treatment.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog getting parve. I have had this experience twice! If caught in time, you will have no trouble with her recovery. Ours go her shot at the vets and we were able to obtain all her medications and cared for her at home. It was really hard because we were basically nursing her every two hours. We weren't able to afford the fees for either to stay in the vet.

One bit of advice- throw away all her toys, eating dishes and rid the area of anything she may have gotten in her mouth. The bacteria can give any other dog the same sickness. In the yard, get rid of the poop. The bacteria can remain active for up to 10 years!

Vigorously clean everything else she may have contact with like the couch, carpeting, etc. You don't want to take the chance of her catching it again or another dog that may enter the area getting it.

BTW, did you notice the smell associated with the sickness? I did! the first time, I was like this smells weird and then she became sick. The second time- I noticed the smell before there were any indications the dog was sick. I told me dad and he said he noticed it too. Then about 2 days later, teh symptoms began. Isn't that so strange???

If it is parvo there is nothing to be done. Yes I have lost a pet to parvo and it usually takes them within a couple days. So sorry and I hope the vet finds out that its something different. Best wishes

Only the vet can do anything. From what I understand it is mainly a case of them getting through it not curing it. The vet will probably keep the dog at the clinic where it can be monitored and kept stable as possible until the disease works its course.

You are doing the right thing by getting her to the vet. The sooner they catch it the better chances they have at fighting it off. My 6 month old labs (2 of them) both caught it. Unfortuantely one passed away, but one pulled through after being treated at the vet for two weeks. We were so happy to get her back. If she stays outside spray her area with clorox really well. If she stays in the house, you might need to find something to spray with. You and your dog are in my prayers...just have faith that she will pull through! Please update us on how it goes!

Get her to the vet immediately. If she has parvo, you can't do anything. Only the vet can help her.
