Can anything be done to eliminate set-in pet stains and odors?
We moved into a rental townhouse in early spring. At first, I noticed an odor that wasn't so pleasant but I attributed this to it being a new place and figured it would dissipate once we cleaned and get settled. Well, the odor has only gotten WORSE because it is from urine stains in the carpet and the warm weather and humidity really brings it out. The landlord had the carpets steam-cleaned right before we moved in and then again 2 wks ago after I complained about the smell. The problem is still just as bad. We are expecting our first baby in just under a month and it's driving me crazy to think we have to bring her home to this environment! To make matters worse, we have a 9 yr old golden retiever. She is a wonderful dog and we have NEVER had problems with her peeing inside. Our landlord has decided that it is our dog that is the problem. I stay at home and would notice wet spots if she were going inside. Is there any way to prove that the stains are old? Any sure way to get rid?
Just wanted to clarify- the stains are OLD and not from our dog. The previous tenants had a puppy. They must have shut it in the bedroom upstairs because that is where the smell is worst. Part of my problem is convincing the landlord that we did not ruin the carpet!!!
Landlord can't believe that carpet is still bad after 2 professional cleanings. He's accusing our dog of "re-creating" the stains. This is absolutely not true, as we would have noticed wet spots. Additionally, we've had the door closed to the spare bedroom ever since the last carpet cleaning, so the dog hasn't even been in there and it still wreaks of urine. Anyone ever uses smell ionizer machines? My mom just ordered us one. I think we'll try that and vinegar and maybe some area rugs.

A liberal solution of Oxy-Clean followed by another solution of baking soda with a final rinse with a Lysol or Pine-sol solution may help. try to get some penetration of solutions into the padding. Use a Good wet/dry vac to lift the solutions out as well as help speed up the drying process. if possible place a "Box" fan on the floor and tilt it so as to keep airflow over the wet-ted spots this will further speed up the drying process.

Vinegar! If you can find the spot where the problem is coming from, douse the carpet with it. I have 3 dogs and one of them tinkled in the hallway and the odor just hit me. I immediately cleaned the area where he did his thing, and I mean I went over it at least 20 times with the scrubber. But hours after it dried, I then ran my hand over the carpet to make sure I got it, and it was still there! I quick and got some vinegar, I used apple cider vinegar (it was all I had on hand), but I put some in a spray bottle and sprayed the heck out of the area in mention and rubbed the vinegar thoroughly into the carpet and let it set and dry. Then when I checked it again....it was gone. I had read somewhere that vinegar kills urine odors, but then you would think you'll smell vinegar? That pungent fragrance soon will dissipate into the air.
And if the odor is all over, they may want to use vinegar t clean the carpets with instead of their chemicals, that never really seem to do any good anyway.

Woolite makes a Pet OXy cleaner - it is a foam that you spray onto the carpet then wipe up. There is also one called Pet Stain out (i believe is the correct name - found at wal-mart) I used both of these products after my cat decided he didn't want to use the litter box (a new one) for about 2 weeks. They removed the odors from the carpet. We cleaned the carpets as well after using the to above products.
What has happen is the odor - urine- is in the carpet pad so it makes it hard to get it out. Many professional cleaners only get the "top" carpet and not all the way down to soak the stuff from the pads.
I wish you the best of luck,

The sure way to get rid of the smell is to scrub it with hot water and white vinegar. the vinegar will kill the enzymes in the urine that cause the smell. if they are really bad you might try it twice but this should get rid of the problem.
Good Luck

There is a product called planet urine that works great! They have several products but I bought the urine out powder & it worked really well. You shake it on the spot and rub it in & then vacuum up the powder, the urine sticks to the powder. I would recommend you use it on the entire room.

pass to a ninety 9 cent keep or dollar keep and purchase some bottles of "impressive"..... i have used this to bathe walls (remove smoke smell), shampoo carpets (receives rid of puppy stains odors) and it easily works on ANY floor. that's an enzyme cleanser, which breaks down the source of the smell and receives rid of stains like you does no longer have self belief. on the issue of the carpet, i have easily further some tblspn of bleach to the answer to help disinfect the fibers. I also boil water on the range and upload it to the resevoir to truly "open up" the carpet fibers for cleansing, it fairly works! reliable success.

you can try using bi carb soda on the carpet... it usually absorbs the smell up...just vacuum your carpet every couple of days... ok it may be a bit messy at 1st but maybe lock your dog away for a couple of days, sorry... as for the dog just put some newspaper down, maybe she may use that to pee on. other wise start training her again for outside...
you can always use sprays such as tea tree oil or lavender on her piddle spots.. best of luck,
hope this helps
Source(s): sorry just had to say, please dont go and use water on your carpet, as this will leave you with big stains.. believe me ive been there and tryed that. i ended up paying for new carpet because i felt so bad to the damage i had made... sorry to people that have suggested to use water... - carlosdavidLv 51 decade ago
Have you tried glade pet odors? check here http://www.glade.com/pet-odors/
you'll have to use it several times to completely get rid of the odor, try using it everyday for 5 days.
If you can move the carpet, put it on a sunny spot.
