Why is my puppy so scared....?

I have a 5 mo. old pup and an 11yr old. My puppy seems to be afraid of people and other dogs! I take her everywhere..(dog beach, walks, petco...etc.) and she cowers and hides behind me whenever other dogs/people try to smell/pet her. How can I stop this?

    your puppy is adorable.

just puppy fear. she will grow out of it at her own pace.

you are doing the right thing by socializer her at a young age.

It is hard. Puppies go thru developmental phases. You socialize puppies with people and with other dogs & animals before they are 5 months old. From 5 - 10 months, they may go thru a fear cycle.

You can try a very gentle socialize method:

    1. Find some patient dog people, bring them to your house, give them tiny little treats (like a cheap hotdog sliced as thin as a dime, then cut into fourths.) Have the people sit on the ground, call the puppy, and hold out one treat.

    2. After she takes the treat, even if she is tentative, then call the puppy and hold out another treat.

Do this in a place with no distractions. Put the 11 yr old somewhere else, also. [Did the 11 yr old tease or bully the puppy ?]

    3. Then, put a few people in a room with the puppy, sitting on the floor. Have one call the puppy and hold out a treat.

    4. Then, after the puppy takes it, have another person call the puppy.

DO this for about 10 minutes, and stop. Do this again for about 5 days straight.

Find someone with a young confident puppy. A Golden retriever or a Labrador that is under 6 mos would be good.

Put them together in a fenced area outside and let them interact, with no people around. (You may have to hide.) The other puppy will scare her, but will not hurt her, and she will learn that she is OK.

After she relaxes a bit, you will need to do this once a week with both people and dogs for about 3 - 5 months.

And don't let the 11 yr old tease or bully the puppy. Because it can be permanent!

I have one idea. Start off with carrying the pup to a certain place, sit with it in your lap or right next to you. Focus on being calm & positive, & talk to it quite a bit. As time at this place (I'm thinking a park), goes by, the pup will learn that it's nice to be with you in a place other than home. Always keep the lead on. I think you'll see the pup wander a bit to the end of its lead in probably no more than a week, week-&-a-half.

I think you're doing it right. Keep introducing the puppy to new places, people, and things. She'll learn to stop being scared of new things eventually.

its just because she hasnt gotten used to the world yet... give it some time.... it may be that she is shy for the rest of her life.... but its nothing to worry about..... wait it out..... also socialization is very helpful... not all dogs are the same though... she just needs to get used to things!!!!!
