God is Emptiness? What do you think?

Since emptiness is the "canvas" on which we, and everything, are all painted and without emptiness there would be no structure or order, is God emptiness; the lack of all "becoming"?

    Hi Neural Zen,

I broadly agree with your statements; but as if to make things difficult, I came across a learned Christian Y! Answerer a month or so back who explained / revealed that the Hebrew word 'Yahweh' (for God) actually literally means 'becoming'.

Hence the final clause of the question's last sentence is challenged.

If we could somehow have 'becoming' without [attachment to / for] becoming, I think that would be our way out. :-)

Thus, for & as means of understanding, I think a 'Middle Path' is wisest.

    Wonderful analogy there.

God is also the emptiness or nothingness, from which all things arise, as all sound arise from emptiness, the emptiness of a throat or that of a guitar to create music.

From emptiness of a canvas, the creator conceives a great new world, from the emptiness of her womb a mother gives birth to a child, and from the emptiness of her womb, the Creator, gives birth to many a new universes. Each new creation, in this universe is an act of love, just as every child is.

An empty mind can receive creative ideas from the Universe, and an empty heart, emptied of all hate, vengeance, anger and sadness, can hold love and joy.

    Keep sharing.

Is the ocean " empty "...only to be filled with and teaming with life ?

Is a canvas " empty " when it's actually when it's looked at very closely the weaves of fibers that's of texture can be seen...Those same fiberous textures that hold the paint so well that is to be applied to that canvas.

" God " the One is of fullness, life and Light...We are simply the words, visions and movements of that Light. And...there was much ' life ' going on before earth and humans were created.

Emptiness . . . You pose the question here " what do you think " ? I can see where you were going with this posted question...yet my reply is . . . I think not.

God is God. Emptiness is emptiness. You cannot equate them. There is no emptiness in God's creation. Everywhere are God's energies distributed.

The basis of everything is the Personality of Godhead. This is described in great lenght in the ancient Vedic scriptures. Here are some relevant verses:

    1. From Bhagavad Gita (The song of God) texts 7.7. and 10.8.

    mattaḥ parataraḿ nānyat

    kiñcid asti dhanañjaya

    mayi sarvam idaḿ protaḿ

    sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva

    TRANSLATION

O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.

    ahaḿ sarvasya prabhavo

    mattaḥ sarvaḿ pravartate

    iti matvā bhajante māḿ

    budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ

    TRANSLATION

I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.

    2. From Brahma samhita (text 5.1.)

    isvarah paramah krsnah

    sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah

    anadir adir govindah

    sarva-karana-karanam

    TRANSLATION

Krsna who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal

blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He

is the prime cause of all causes.

I hope this answer your question

God is the light that leads you out of the emptiness. The emptiness is God's canvas.

In your means of asking the question I'd say yes god is all emptiness, yet it is all fullness at the same time. Furthermore, I'd so that god is all that is and all that is not at the same time. Transcend your idea of God to the point of energy and you will see that god is both manifest and non-manifest at the same time. Some time energy is experienced as pure and sometimes energy becomes lost (latent) in the density of its form.

Good original idea..... may I take the liberty to refine it a bit?

Emptiness is strictly space in which everything manifests physically.... God is supposed to have created that... therefore we may say that God must be 'nothingness' since that alone can exist outside the entire space, if at all.

  • 1 decade ago

God is spiritual but but not physical. However His spirituality is manifest in the physical. The earth, moon, sun and and the universe is the manifest works of His existence and divinity.

  • 1 decade ago

That would at best be pantheism, and more likely atheism. To say a thing is "emptiness" is to say it doesn't exist.

God is a figment of the human imagination. So whatever you believe god is, is what god is to you.
